As sad as it is to think about, I assume that marvel will maybe try to work with his family to see how they would feel about a recasting, just because it’s hard to see an MCU without at least a few more appearances from the Black Panther, and I thought they’d want Shuri to grow as Shuri for a few movies before she took over the role.

Idk. Everything about this sucks. I was so excited to see him in the BP role again.

though, that being said, while it wasn’t public Feige/Coogler 100% had to have known, with insurance stuff for films. have to imagine they had a worst case scenario contingency plan.

It’s going to be extremely difficult on an emotional level for Duke, Wright, Gurira, and Bassett to film the next BP.

While I’m sure Feige and Coogler were aware of Boseman’s situation and have something in mind for the future of the franchise, I also would completely understand if they let the other actors rest for a while.

I just feel like, for people who Black Panther meant a lot to, many will be eager to revisit Wakanda way sooner than they will be ready to let Chadwick Boseman be officially "replaced" (even by Letitia Wright).

When the Ta-Nehisi Coates Black Panther comic launched, there was a spinoff called "World of Wakanda," which focused on the Dora Milaje & other supporting characters from that run. And, Shuri also ended up with a spinoff at one point outside of being "the Black Panther"; there was a Killmonger miniseries, too. So, there's certainly precedent for stories dealing with Wakanda without being about the king.

Obviously it's gonna emotionally suck for the main cast to return to this world without Chadwick regardless, no matter how long they wait. They're not gonna want to even discuss options for a while, nor should they. But, I do feel like a tasteful, honoring, appropriate next step when the time is right could be a film called, like, "World or Wakanda" or "Wakanda Forever," as a way to bridge the gap. Something where you follow someone else's journey (maybe even a new character?) in this world. Something where there can be some dialogue here & there about T'Challa that doubles as a tribute to Chadwick without having an overly conspicuous absence or explanation.

Do you think it’s more likely that the character of T’Challa will be retired instead of being recast?

At this point I see Boseman being seen as THE T’Challa similar to Downey as Stark. He could be replaced but the magic will be gone, especially with the strong presence he had in the four films he was in.

For sure, & Angela Bassett, too.

I think introducing Storm in the next Wakanda-set film would be another good way to soften the blow as well.

I believe he was captured at the end of Black Panther, & not seen or addressed in either Avengers film afterwards.

Good thing she has literally nothing to do with Iron Man then.

Maybe I’ll come back to this when it’s been a couple weeks since we lost Chadwick (instead of one day) to argue about how little sense it makes.

In the meantime, I’ll just say I decided to throw Black Panther on, & Letitia Wright is just such an absolute delight.

An actor will play Black Panther/T’Challa again, probably not for at least a decade though. I doubt that Chadwick Boseman’s specific MCU version of the character will be recast.

Talking about this sucks. What a profound and heavy loss.

Whatever happens to this Black Panther franchise, we will someday have another T’Challa, & also another Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, etc. But, when that happens will probably depend a lot on the longevity of this current shared universe, which certainly doesn’t yet feel even close to running out of gas.

Yeah, with FF, X-Men, and other franchises joining this universe we are not getting a reboot anytime soon (probably not within 30 years) and I don’t believe we’ll get a new Stark or T’Challa until the universe is rebooted.

Maybe someone may play an older T’Challa down the line if they just write the character off for now?

On an uplifting note, watching the comic community support and grieve with each other over this fills me sadness while warming my heart a bit.

The MCU will definitely reboot at some point. Look how many times spider-man reboots. And comics. And just movies in general. So I think we will see T’Challa again at some point

spider-man/batman rebooted so many times bc of structural issues that ... MCU has never had. i’m sure they will recast stuff eventually but it will never “start over” in the same way every other comics franchise has. i feel extremely confident in that. i would put money on it.

I think there's going to come a time when, years down the line, they want to "bring back" the characters of Steve Rogers and Tony Stark just to capitalize on nostalgia or just because they've run out of other ideas. When that time comes, they could potentially do it via a reboot of the universe. But I don't think that would happen for a very long time.

Of course, they could also justify it by saying they're bringing the Steve Rogers/Tony Stark over from an alternate timeline, so who knows.

It’s comic books, these characters will be recast and rebooted endlessly as long as the medium and genre exist. The MCU is built for more longevity than previous standalone interpretations of characters like Batman and Spider-Man, but there will be a day where all of these characters are played by new actors in new stories. I’d say it’s about 20 years out, at least. Barring any alternate universe/back from the dead shenanigans.

I see retired characters coming back years from now for a big event (Secret Wars?) in some sort of old man Rogers/Stark (from other universes) sort of hype similar to The Force Awakens. Ultimately, I guess it depends on how well the new characters are received.

Of course, that situation would be difficult for T'Challa unless they get an older actor to play an old version of the character. If they don't recast Stark and Rogers and instead just let the actors return when they are older, I wouldn't want them to recast T'Challa. It really sucks because T'Challa is a hero that many kids look up to and not seeing him on screen again is crushing. It's a tough situation.
