The only Kevin Smith movie I’ve seen is Tusk and otherwise my main association with him is the Infamous Tweet and also the big jorts tweet so I
think my perspective on him is eternally skewed

I don’t love most of Kevin’s movies, but he always seemed like a decent dude who rarely has a bad word to say about anyone and I always appreciated that and rooted for him

But this is the first time I’ve heard about that tweet and holy shit. still not a bad guy but what the fuck man

The first half dozen or so were staples growing up. I like most of his stuff. Even found Tusk and Red State interesting enough.

dude loves his wife. I saw him speak at my college and his whole thing is how a hot woman would marry a (back then) fat ass like him. He poked fun at the tweet on its 10th anniversary

I think the first half of Tusk is genuinely pretty good. Once Johnny Depp shows us a cocknosed goof detective, it totally falls apart. I still haven’t watched Red State

I used to listen to Jay and Silent Bob Get Old and I remember him getting fairly graphic about how much he loves his wife, and that’s lovely and I dig that they’re a healthy couple and all, but the wording of that tweet is...oof.

And for what it’s worth, if the worse thing you can say about a male director these days is he has bad fashion and publicly says he loves his wife’s “brown taint”, well...he’s alright.

Like any white suburban teenager, I felt like his movies really spoke to me in high school. But they really haven’t aged great and his new movies suck shit. He is a fascinating cult of personality, so I see the appeal. But I think as a filmmaker, he’s the opposite of talented.

I feel like Clerks at least deserves some credit.

Haha is this a reference to the new episode? Haven’t listened yet if so. But I was being totally facetious Degrassi was absolutely my jam when they were on there.

Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno are all good movies. I also like Clerks 2 although I know most people don’t.

  19. I'm not the biggest J&SB fan, but I would agree with this and add that Chasing Amy is a problematic-yet-fascinating watch and that I don't think his horror flicks are nearly as bad as some people say.

I do think he's talented, even if he did kind of fall off over the past decade, and he seems by all counts to be a good dude who made a handful of formative films for a lot of people, so I'm glad he's still around and all respect to him for doing what he wants

The only one I’ve watched recently is zack and miri and I think it holds up. I used to like clerks, clerks 2, chasing Amy and dogma but I haven’t watched any of those in probably 10 years so I’m not sure how well they hold up.

  21. I'd say Clerks and Dogma hold up, the others are questionable

Chasing Amy doesn't understand sexuality but is a good critique of masculinity and the way men view ownership of women's sexuality.

Clerks and Mallrats were probably the ones I watched most, they're still enjoyable. I really liked Dogma at the time, though it's not quite perfect. Clerks II was solid but I haven't watched it in a long time. Those are probably the only Kevin Smith films I can see myself revisiting in earnest.

He's a strong writer, not a particularly strong director, and basically after Dogma it seemed like he didn't really have anything meaningful to say in his movies. Maybe bits of Red State and Jay & Silent Bob Reboot had moments. I have seen him speak 3 times which seems like a lot looking back but once was at a Barnes & Noble across the street from me in LA and once was part of the Freep Film Festival that I was already attending anyway. He seems like a good guy.

Tell Em Steve Dave is the best thing Kevin Smith has had any involvement with

Kevin Smith has a very devoted fan base who seem to be willing to pay him whatever he charged for things (the movie tour prices have been insane) but he has found a business model that he can milk for all he can. I am not sure how much input other than the naming he had in the overall project but it sounds a horrible idea and execution all round. THIRTY DOLLARS!!!
