exceptions to what? the genre being unique? is that not true for every single genre? the existence of generic music in a genre does not mean the genre as a whole is not unique. what a foolish way of thinking. and there are many, many rappers currently pushing boundaries in the way rap sounds and feels in the 2010s. so many. to say otherwise is downright wrong.
im not getting defensive im just telling you your argument doesn't make sense. rap is driven by message, that message is backed up by some of the most forward thinking music in the modern age. they are both important, they both push the genre forward. and there are artists who stay unique while releasing huge bodies of work.

Be kind; everyone is on their own journey.

Dire Straits, Moody Blues, and Huey Lewis are all legendary.

None of this is what I'm trying to say. Im saying there are rappers I think are good that hardly change their musical approach at all and it doesn't seem to bother their ability to still create fresh inspiration in the listener.

Now Kendrick Lamar is my favorite and I think his instrumentals are ridiculously creative. I'm not saying rap is one or the other, I'm saying rap can go both ways.

Yeah and there's also artists who don't and actually do release 4 albums a year of really similar stuff. That doesn't work in genres that aren't driven by message but it can work in hip hop depending how strong the messages are.

These two are probably both in my top five from him. "Closer to the Truth" is so Bruce.

I think Thurston Moore is a better guitarist than a lot of renowned soloists/"virtuoso" type guitarists

I think it's more difficult to make controlled noise with a guitar than it is to play around scales super fast

I like lyrics that are simple and straightforward so it works for me! I've never cared for the structure of them so much as long as I can relate to the lyrics and the artist singing them knows how to emote

But then again I don't see them as a hypothetical convo that rhymes like you do

    My people.

I can get down with +++, probably because he actually sings instead of doing that weird heavy-breathing moaning stuff. But that's it. I've tried for years but it just doesn't stick at all for me.

I understand people not liking Chino's voice and general approach to vocals when they first listen to Deftones.

After a while though... meh, they're just wrong.
