Trout Mask Replica is exactly the right kind of weird. Lick My Decals is close second and Safe As Milk third. A lot of Beefhearts other stuff hasn't grabbed me like those three, though.

 

Someone should make a Beefheart thread...

 

Speaking of ranking things, the ranking of the Big Four of Thrash goes like this:

1. Anthrax
2. Metallica
3. Megadeth

Since someone posted in here that the two guys from The 1975 are better songwriters than Lennon and McCartney were, I'm no longer shocked by any music opinions.

 

Hey, at least Anthrax never released Lulu, Super Collider or God Hates Us All. I'm just sayin'.

They never released Master of Puppets or Reign in Blood either.

 

Lennon/McCartney weren't diverse enough to write a tropical house track and Jagger/Richards sure as hell couldn't incorporate shoegaze elements.

I don't even like Slayer and that's a bad list.

 

Slayer's best work are individual tracks as opposed to full albums - not to say that their stuff is bad outside the top five tracks everyone knows, I just have no reaction to most of it. Also Kerry is a douche canoe. Megadeth have much better songwriting, their albums flow together much better, their riffs are consistently way better, but Dave Mustaine's vocals and hilariously bad lyrics are good for memes and nothing else (that and his personality makes him basically the Metal Kanye West which doesn't help) - plus, again, released a few stinkers. Metallica have better vocals, tighter riffs and less corny lyrics along with albums that are bangers throughout but have released more egregiously bad albums than all the rest of the Big Four. Anthrax have never released a bad album, even their weakest albums such as their 90's material is still pretty good and have some genuinely great moments, and are still releasing damn fine music today.

So I suppose to me it's more about consistency of quality. But to me, if you release a few masterpieces but also some of the worst albums ever throughout your discography, you're not the best band.
