I’ll put it on the reading list.

  4. The TV show, my bad shoulda been more clear. (The comics are good too.) It’s the best (two) Robins I’ve ever seen in screen.

If you haven't read it before, read Year One first. Both because it's the best standalone Batman book as far as I'm concerned, & because it's a perfect look at the start of his career. (And, if you haven't, but have seen the animated film... That's not a substitute. You need to take in that immaculate David Mazzucchelli art.) And, if you have read it, um... Read it again.

Feel like Long Halloween is the natural next stop after Year One, since it could be seen as an unofficial sequel; then, Dark Victory after that. (You could also give Catwoman: When in Rome a shot, which is the same creative team & I think takes place during Dark Victory.)

Then, you could go with Robin: Year One, followed by Batgirl: Year One. Haven't personally read the Robin one, but I adore the Batgirl one. Both have some fantastic art. Marcos Martín's Batgirl art is gorgeous.

After you hit up all the early career stuff, feels like a perfect time to read Hush, which I suspect will play into this movie some. Oh! And, if you wanna read some Catwoman, too, then read the Ed Brubaker/Darwyn Cooke Catwoman around this same time. Maybe right before Hush? Forget the exact timeline there.

Maybe Court of Owls after that? Though, if you have interest in a little Dick Grayson Batman, then the Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely Batman & Robin should come before Owls. (And, Batman: Black Mirror I believe takes place between B&R and Owls. Batman Incorporated somewhere around here, too.)

Then, I personally strongly recommend Tom King's Batman run. I haven't finished it, & it's a bit uneven at times, but it's overall my personal favorite ongoing Batman comic work. The highs are some real character high marks for me. The whole Batman/Catwoman relationship is particularly wonderful.

Don't need to read all of that (I haven't), but whatever you do read of it, I personally suggest that order to get a good facsimile of a continuing story (though small details won't quite line up, since DC continuity is always a little fluid & vague at best).

That’s good to hear due to it recently being announced that Titans is going to HBO Max. Is the show based off of any particular comics?

Harleen and Joker:Killer Smile/Batman: Smile Killer are decent Batman adjacent comics from DC's Black Label. I also hear that Batman: White Knight is good, but I haven't read it myself.

Definitely want to get into come of Cooke’s material after Dark Victory/Catwoman: When In Rome. Hush has been on my reading schedule for a bit, but I believe now is the time to check it out.

Thanks for the suggested order of reading for all of these. The timeline of comics can seem a bit overbearing at times.

Titans needs a bigger audience for sure. Some weird choices, but it certainly is the best version of Dick Grayson we've seen. Is it migrating to HBO Max?

Definitely excited to check out Titans when it comes to HBO Max. Just binged Doom Patrol recently and it's absolutely one of my favorite comic book shows.

  15. Yeah, from what I heard it is. It definitely made some weird choices in the second season, too many flashbacks, but by and large I still really like it. (Not as much as Doom Patrol or Harley Quinn, but the version of Dick/Robin and Jason/Robin we got is fantastic and everything I've always wanted to see in live action. I had the biggest smile on my face at so many different moments in that show; just stupid grinning.)

Everyone kills it in their roles. Perfect casting. I'm always so happy to see Brendan Fraser back on screen

  18. Nothing I can think of. They go in a different direction with most of the characters. There's some of Tom King's Grayson in there, but more around the edges than any specific comic it's following that I know of. I never read any of the Raven comics, so maybe there's something in there that's used.

At least appearance-wise, I don't see how it can get better than Titans Nightwing. The suit/actor are absolutely perfect

Don't watch Titans, but seems like its Dick Grayson is one who's pretty well past the Batman & Robin dynamic. I'd still like to see whatever a modern cinematic take on "the dynamic duo" would look like.

Isn't the current canon that Bruce took him in as a teenager? If you got someone like Tom Holland when he was originally cast as Spider-Man, & gave him a costume inspired by some of the later Robins, I think it could work. Just make the whole circus thing a key piece of a bigger investigation. If they're shooting for a trilogy here, with the detective vibe continuing through the series, then that could be a good fit for the third film, with a more hopeful ending after putting Bruce through some shit.

Feel like, outside of remnants from a certain generation, most people would say they don't want Batman to have a Robin (unless, like, he's already all grown up & whatnot), so probably won't happen. But, I dunno, I think there's some unexplored ground there.

  24. Similar to what they did in Titans with Jason. And Bruce failing him (and failing Dick) is a pretty big arc in the second season. There's also some flashbacks with younger Robin and Bruce, but not as much. I think Patman is too young at the moment for the Robin thing, but maybe by movie three?

Since Robin's sometimes a "Batman: Year Three" development, he's arguably not that far removed, though that's in the old comics continuity when Robin was a little kid in green underoos, lol. If they average a movie every 3 years, Pattinson will be about 40 when the 3rd one shoots, which is a good age for bringing in a teenage Robin.

(I see that Pattinson was born in '86, which is fitting since that's the year Dark Knight Returns came out & the character was, for better or worse, reborn. Also means I'm now barely younger than Batman, lol; probably shouldn't ask, but is he the first Batman who's younger than you?)
