I don't have much opinion on Metallica for the sole reason I've never felt an inclination to listen to them. Yet. Does that make me a bad person? I hope not.

I'm just not crazy about the gospel level of it. Love acid rap and was hoping for something on that level

I like Acid Rap but Coloring Book is far superior imo. It's definitely a top 10 album of the year for me.

Even Dream Theater has some great solos that aren't masturbatory. Guitar solos are wonderful things.

Coloring Book AOTY, even before adding in Grown Ass Kid.

But the thing with releases in the spotlight like this, they'll never be as publicly well received as the last album. Acid Rap came out of nowhere for most people and blows them away and that blows up Chance and now he's getting huge opportunities and working with bigger names and doing huge things. So he drops a more polished, stronger, very well written follow-up, and the majority of people even if they love it will say they like Acid Rap better for one simple fact, being that they had no expectations for Acid Rap, and high expectations for the follow up. You can't beat no expectations, even exceeding expectations pales in comparison.

A lot of people don't "write" solos they improvise them. To me it's about playing pure organic emotion and not worrying super hard about fitting an exact rigid melody. Which to me sometimes is the right thing to do in a song that has an addictive backing guitar riff to play on top of, and needs a climax.

I just think that a lot of people aren't that great at improvising emotively (really requires tons of practice and setting/remembering precedents of what sounds good on what kinds of chords before you really get a feel for it).. and it sounds masturbatory because they can't come up with melodies that make sense, or fit the mood, off the top of their head.

A good improvised solo should inspire feeling, not just overload you with detail. But I strongly disagree that any guitar solo is automatically just a showoffy thing with no artistic purpose.

I'm with you but I think rap is just different because it's a lot more about the message than always coming up with fiercely unique music (though there IS plenty of innovation going on in the instrumentals as well.) You can come up with new messages in rap and even if the music isn't that different the material is still perceived as fresh.

Personally just feel like pop lyrics have gotten less like poetry and more just like, hypothetical conversations that rhyme. I tend to like them better a few decades ago.

However I also think the influence of hip hop on pop lately could tilt it back in a more eloquent direction.

I'm really not saying it isn't unique you don't have to get all defensive. Haha. Im just saying the message tends to be the primary component and that's why some rappers can afford to release a lot more material with less time sitting on the instrumentals

Like, there's a lot of musical possibilities being explored in rap and that has become especially true the last few years. I would say the musical boundaries of rap are wider than almost all other genres. But that doesn't change the fact that there are also some rappers that can still continually appeal to an audience without changing their musical approach all that much. Because their lyrics are so good and the main part of their appeal. I'm not talking about the majority of rap or anything, im just saying it's easier to succeed off of message alone in a rap career than it is in other music styles. (Though those messages also face much more scrutiny than in any other genre as well.)

So yes, rap has lots of very unique instrumentals. But no, it's not a REQUIREMENT to always go after innovation and major changes in the style of the backing music to be a good rapper either.
