ah I thought you meant people were calling them the #1 and #2 mixtapes of all time so I was thinking "nah...."

I really don't even dislike them! I just don't think every song is great

 

I hate reading reviews before listening to albums for that reason. If it's something I'm anticipating and I see negative reception for it, I'll go into it looking for what's wrong with it. It's much easier to fight negative opinions when you already know that you like it.

 

also using pitchfork as a metric, especially for hip hop, is probably not the best source...

tbh the only Future love I encounter is on this site. not that my anecdotal experiences mean anything in regards to his legacy, just that this the only place I really hear the love, but anyway... my actual rambly point is that it's always so heartwarming to see the passion he's talked about with on here.

well considering how many of pitchforks writers write for traditionally "hip hop" sites like complex, xxl, hiphopdx etc, i dunno what to tell ya! weird stance to adopt tbh, especially when its not like thats the only pub that lined up behind future/thug

that's true. i still haven't listened to Views because of the mixed reaction it got, even though i liked IYRTITL and NWTS. (also because it's pretentiously long)

My intense hatred stems from seeing this shitty cover band. A friend took me because her friend was the drummer, they played top 40 songs and were basically karaoke with two standard singers. The drummer, keyboardist, and bassist all looked incredibly bummed, they were doing the musical equivalent of hard thankless labor. The two singers were having a fun time, but really it seemed like the guitarist's entire life. He was cheesily smiling the entire time, the first song they played was some standard pop song of like four years ago played in full, then he added a guitar solo, then they played the chorus one more time, basically elongating the song by a minute or so. At that point I was like sure, that's a fun change up to the song. And he did that exact same thing for the next song, and the next song, and for like 8 more songs until we left, full cover, guitar solo, one more chorus. Not only was it structurally bankrupt of any creativity, but the solo was like the exact same every time, and there were like two or three people doing that wiggly finger thing at him encouraging this behavior.

So yeah I'm being hyperbolic and really only talking about the tacked on guitar solo as filler that is widely common and not actual expansive guitar parts that add to a song and emphasize emotion or guitar based jazz music which is like technically all solo based. But also fuck guitar solos still, that shit is filler 90% of the time.

 

they'll give at least a 7 to anything that is hyped up enough regardless of content

Metallica sucks.

 

Yeah Letters is my favorite and then Ghosts is after that but everything so far has been really good!

the first ones are 6.8 and 6.9... that's practically a 7?

If an album is hyped up enough and ends up not being that great they will give it around a 7 because it's an unoffensive score.. seems pretty reasonable to me

 

6.8 = 7

 

Metallica, Slayer, and Journey are prob the 3 bands that played most in the house growing up and I just can't hate them. I can also never admit to my dad I don't hate them cause I whined about them too much as a kid, and I have an image to uphold!

 

I said practically a 7...

 

Maybe 2012 P4k isn't a good rap source, but I feel like they took a hard pivot towards rap and away from indie in the past year or two.
