Exactly, I get how it would be off putting to some but I can’t imagine the record any other way.

also shout out to Mike Starr for that incredible bass tone

To clarify, it's not just the content and tone, its that the songs with that content and tone have very unmemorable melodies for me.

I binge-watched Season 1 of Central Park and am very distressed to report that my favorite of the many good songs is the one Meghan Trainor wrote.

    How's that for bad?

I started listening to the post-Layne material for the first time last night. Was struck by how similar Jerry’s harmonies with William are to the OG stuff with Layne. And the riffs are still fucking killer

You know, say what you want about Katy Perry's Fireworks lyrics but man if I don't think about that song every time I'm walking outside and see an empty plastic bag floating around #iconic

Gotta give it credit for just outright stealing that image's cultural association away from American Beauty.

I dunno how unpopular this opinion is but when people flip the fuck out upon hearing that you're unfamiliar with the work of an artist or band deemed "classic" by the mystical council of druids that determine whatever is considered the popular music canon... That is, actually, one of the top ten most annoying things on the planet.

i guess it’s less for me the unfamiliarity and more just getting annoyed for not totally worshiping the canonical bands

To be fair, in that case I'd wager the musical canon/ethos of rap specifically is pretty important to the genre and its cultural following hahaha

Then again I know next to nothing about rap really so I could totally be talking out my ass

  18. Good for you! I like to listen to music, form my own opinions, and THEN read review articles, if I feel like it.

This is what I do. If it’s an album I really like I’ll sometimes look up a review but I never read reviews before listening to something.

I used to be way into reading them when I was younger, now I’ll just read them occasionally if written by a friend.

Used to write a looooot and and then ironically kinda stopped once I started contributing here. But writing them was always a great way to become more in tune with the records I loved. Being able to actually give language to the feeling the music gave me in the concrete written form could be really therapeutic

i occasionally read p4k reviews even though only 1/5 or so make me glad I read it. i read steven hyden though that isn't a traditional "review." and of course I read @Drew Beringer and @Craig Manning

I don't really read reviews to "discover" stuff anymore, unless it's a writer or publication I really trust. But when I get really into an album, I like to read just about every take on it I can get. Did that this year with Reunions, Gaslighter, folklore, Imploding the Mirage, etc. I love hearing different perspectives on albums I adore and basically discovering different ways to approach/think about those songs/records. I find it absolutely deepens my appreciation of the music.

I also find that I sometimes don't fully appreciate an album until I write about it. There are records that I've done retrospectives for years after the fact where I've done a deep dive on the music/my experience with it and then been like, "Oh, that's why that album really stuck with me" at the end of the process.

I like album reviews when they treat the album as a jumping off point to something broader but very rarely when its just 'this album is good bc of x y and z'

I don't write much anymore, but I feel this way when I discuss/analyze albums with people. Really makes me realize what I love about them.
