The people that are Jesus's biggest "supporters" would absolutely hate him in real life. From his skin color to his love of the poor and much in between.

It is my conclusion that many Christians would happily crucify Jesus.

The catholic teachings as a whole definitely align more with the left than the right. Very rare you’ll find a catholic conservative using their religion to defend their fiscal conservatism or war hawk tendencies. They’ll use it to defend anti-abortion and traditional social positions.

Meanwhile the major teachings include being accepting of all people no matter who they are and helping the poor and those most in need. That’s not a republican position. I think Catholics as a whole actually voted majority democratic in the 2016 election, but you’ll have to fact check that one.

I would agree with but as someone who grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school for a long time, that anti-abortion stance is the one that pushes them Republican every fucking time. They become one issue voters real quick when it comes to that.

I guess for me I just meant the obvious corruption and horrible crimes of the church itself and there being no accountability whatsoever, really doesn’t jive with any victim justice or social justice that any branch of the left would demand. I can see though separating the church leadership from the religion itself being a thing, and I just never thought of that with Catholicism.

I’m a Christian but definitely not a catholic, and yeah I agree Jesus was mostly a socialist. Doesn’t mean he was catholic imo haha

Yep this is the environment I was raised in. Single issue voters. They are the cheapest prom dates.

See shows how much I know about Catholics. I thought they were universally anti-gay and women couldn’t be priests and all that rigidness. Episcopalians were always more liberal and inclusive and I always thought that was the big difference between the two

There are plenty of non-catholic denomination that are more terribly more conservative than catholicsm and in between that and more liberal congregations

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I think the church itself has a lot of problematic stuff and I don't really consider myself religious anymore. It is really disappointing that women can't be priests and that so many folks are just stuck in these harmful traditions that have been ingrained in them for decades. But I think when you just break things down into the actual teachings and messages spread by Jesus in the Bible and repeated in multiple masses, there's more there then what some people twist things into to fit their own agenda.

My fiance and I were both raised in Catholic households, and yet we were taught very different stuff. My upbringing focused on God's love and forgiveness, while she was raised on the doom and gloom of a spiteful, punishing God that still haunts her to this day. Wild how different people's views can be under the same religion

Feel like a lot of Catholics are reverse libertarians: fiscally progressive & socially conservative.

Growing up i was taught to look down on Catholic idolatry and ritualism but you know what? Huh?

I think they're pretty cool. So what if you wanna do bunch of hail marys in front of a statue of mary. I say go for it if it makes you feel better.

Yeah a lot of the lovey hippy dippy new testament stuff pushes some Catholics to side with the 'little guy' and workers and laborers and poor people and etc. At least that's what i've observed.

But yeah def seems to be conditioned on the church you grew up with lol

As a lifelong Protestant, the ritual/liturgical side of Catholicism (& similar denominations) is something I’ve grown to really love in recent years. All those contemplative practices rule. Glad my church dabbles in some of those things. They’re great for centering yourself & connecting to God.

For all the aspects of organized religious systems that I’ve grown burnt out on in recent years, some of those religious practices are super underrated, imo.
