Hey remember last week when a Leelanau County road commissioner in northern Michigan said the n word on a call in front of an audience and then doubled down on it to a reporter saying it another 4 times on the record?

well, they’re at it again, nearly unable to define and pass anti racism resolution and look at this fucking quote:

a mom and daughter on the commission said that abortion of black babies is racism and later said the word racial is a slur in and of itself because it segregates people into groups.

    truly insane, insane stuff.

So I didn’t read the thread today, so I don’t know if this has been mentioned yet, but there’s already some new birther stuff getting out there.

My wife’s (since deleted) Facebook friend shared a post with a lot of traction about Kamala being ineligible for the presidency if Biden dies in office by first suggesting that she wasn’t born here, but then backpedaling and saying that even if she was born here then she is an anchor baby. They said it would be a serious threat to our democracy.

It hadn’t even been 24 hours since the announcement by the time this starting making the rounds.

I vaguely remember that being mentioned by some on the right when she announced she was running for President. Not surprising that it’s coming back to light

Not to fully defend her prosecutorial record cause obviously it is problematic in a number of ways but there seems to be zero consideration being given to the completely seismic shift in what would be considered a "progressive prosecutor" between the mid-late aughts and now. Having a familial window into what that world is like in the present day and considering the fairly total movement in our culture over that period I can only imagine what attempting incremental reform from within was like, and given some of the moves she made towards the end of her time as a prosecutor and as AG I feel like the record as a whole is being portrayed a little too black and white

Withholding access to dna evidence from innocent death row defendants seems like it shouldn’t be able to be defended. That’s evil.
Honestly though I’m not sure what’s being defended there. Everything in the NYT article seemed really bad. It was only like 10-15 years ago. Seems like it’s ok to want accountability. People’s lives were ruined, bad cops weren’t held accountable.

With Harris I’m upset that someone with that record rose to such heights but I also totally understand why there are reasons to be hopeful and optimistic with her. Someone said yesterday they hope she takes the office with empathy and I really hope so too. I really do. I’m encouraging people to vote for that ticket more because of her than Biden. What I can’t get behind is taking her record and justifying it and defending it and having me believe that for the time it was actually progressive. That kind of attitude lets politicians, especially prosecutors, continue this kind of career ladder and that I can’t stand. That shit was never progressive, certainly not just a decade ago.

To clarify I don't mean to say that she was a progressive prosecutor by the standard of the times, and the Kevin Cooper case is undeniably a miscarriage of justice and I believe she's admitted as much and has come out in support of the DNA test, she has those marks on her record which is why I understand a level of reticence to believe she'll take to the job with empathy. I guess what I was responding to in the initial post was some of the misleading numbers you see flying around about her supposedly putting 1500 people in prison for weed etc in an attempt to negate a very progressive voting record in the senate. So I would say I am in the same boat of cautious optimism that we can get a better idea of her governing priorities in weighing the two records against each other
