I always find your opinions insightful. You may not always be flashing terminology or giving detailed breakdowns, but they're always genuine and come from an honest place, and that's the most valuable thing.

    Fwiw

I just can't deal with The Path. The other two albums are quality, but would be much better if they weren't divided the way they were and were more intermingled

Thanks! It's always cool seeing people discuss music all knowledgeable, like a really beautiful tennis match or something so I wish I could do it. but it's cool. what I lack in musical knowledge I can make up for in exclamation points and Friends references!

Could you BE any more on point with your references?

But yeah I hope I'm not part of that "we always disagree so it's annoying" thing. We have very different takes a lot of the time, but I respect how seriously you take pop music and only ever debate with respect in mind.

Oh no I actually didn't have anyone in here in mind but my brother in law who hates on lots of artists cause they're not "real" enough so we always get into it lol. It can get draining especially since what's "real" is so subjective so it's like what's the point of this discussion? Lol idk

Agree w/ @Kiana sometimes I just don't have the mental energy to talk about music with someone with totally opposite tastes. At the end it's going to come down to "agree to disagree" and with how little time I have to listen to music these days, the likelihood that I'm going to give a second chance to something I dislike is slim

Ugh. The "real" discussion. Even admitting that my perception of sincerity is the selling point for a lot of artists with me, it's only one of many.

Clean perfection can be a selling point. Technical excellence can be a selling point. Sugar rush can be a selling point. Loose and homespun can be a selling point. There's so much art out there. If you're not seeking variety and all the different things art can give you, the fuck are you doing?

Regarding double albums, I'm usually initially unimpressed when I discover that an album is a double album or when an artist is planning to release one. I feel like the album has to prove to me that it's worth two discs and has to win me over. Funny that you compared the track listing to maths equations since I like maths equations.

I can name a few albums that should really have been single albums, an example is Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins. Even in the days when I used to be a bigger Pumpkins fan than I am now, I used to never see Mellon Collie as the classic album that it's held up to be. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Filler would be a more apt name for the album. If the album was trimmed down to a single album then it could have come close to matching Siamese Dream. 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields could also be trimmed down substantially.

But there are some double albums that work remarkably well and I wouldn't change anything about them. For example, Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life, and Leaves Turn Inside You by Unwound. Reducing them to single albums would compromise the overall impact of those albums, and leave something which doesn't quite work.

So it's really not just the Early November you hate you just don't like that music style.

Probably not going to have unbiased judgment on the quality of their songwriting if you don't like the vibe they were aiming for in the first place. Like, I don't tend to think Death Metal has good songwriters haha but that's obviously a bias because I don't like how death metal songs are constructed and what they aim to do.

Beverly Hills by Weezer isn't as terrible as everyone makes it out to be, I wouldn't necessarily say it's good but there's some good lyrics and it feels very Rivers in retrospect

It's the story of how an embittered blue collar father with a gambling/drinking problem (The Mechanic) and an uncommitted mother who left the family for more selfish pursuits (The Mother) affected the early life of their son and the choices he made (The Path), which in turn negatively affected HIS son.

It's a great story about how degenerate parenting and/or not paying attention to your children can cause long term emotional damage, can influence the child to make unproductive choices out of resentment, and can instigate repetitive patterns in the family. Worth listening to at least once, especially if you're familiar with the lyrical concepts in the first two discs.

And the way they use music as a backdrop to the storytelling is spot on, sometimes they'll have a spoken word session about something and then the next track is a song that actually puts the images and feelings of that spoken content in your head. Only pitfall is it is a bit corny at times.

Also, last post about that triple album, if you don't like the way the electric guitars and drums sound production-wise on the Mechanic there is something just, wrong haha. Songwriting aside, i consider myself an audiophile in ways and that disc in particular just sounds GREAT. They wanted to make a hard rock record and I think they nailed it without losing their heart-on-sleeve melodic appeal.
