Eminem’s ‘Marshall Mathers LP’ Is Now 20

Really interesting read by Jeff Weiss. I was never an Eminem fan, but I agree with basically everything in this article. It says exactly what I have been trying (but failing) to articulate about pre-Eminem Show Eminem.

“The Marshall Mathers LP certified Eminem as an alienated voice of a generation, a caustic wedge issue distilling the spirits of Elvis, Holden Caulfield, Johnny Rotten, Kurt Cobain, Cartman from South Park, and Tupac if he shopped at Kroger. In a postmodern abyss where everything’s performative, it might have been the last album that possessed the capacity to genuinely shock.”

“Beyond the four-dimensional virtuosity and berserk imagination, Eminem intuitively translated Tupac’s “fuck the world” mentality to disaffected white suburban teenagers without sacrificing hip-hop credibility.”

What are people's thoughts on Immortal Technique?

I recently begun delving into their record 'Revolutionary Vol. 2', and on first listen I was immediately drawn in and loved the vibe and pace, but as I got further into it I must say there's some choice words which don't sit well with me. Could that be though that I am putting too much of my own feelings into a piece of art, instead of trying to separate myself from it? Has anyone else had this experience? I'm generally interested to know.

I like some Immortal Technique stuff, but haven't really listened to him in like 15 years outside of catching a live set a few years back - Not the type of thing I'd usually reach to put on, tbh

New Greedo project coming in August (haven't seen a confirmed date). Produced by Ron-Ron. I'm assuming the Chief Keef collab from earlier this month will be on here too.

I was thinking about this with the "Back to 2013" thread - is 2013 the most important/defining year for hip-hop of the 2010s?

    2013 gave us:
    Kanye West - Yeezus
Drake - Nothing Was the Same
Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels
    A$AP Rocky - LONG.LIVE.A$AP
Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap
Childish Gambino - Because the Internet
    Tyler, the Creator - Wolf
    Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
    Young Thug - 1017 Thug
Mac Miller - Watching Movies With the Sound Off
    J.Cole - Born Sinner
    A$AP Ferg - Trap Lord
    Denzel Curry - Nostalgic 64
    Danny Brown - Old
Dizzy Wright - The Golden Age
Pusha T - My Name Is My Name
    Juicy J - Stay Trippy
    Freddie Gibbs - ESGN
Logic - Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever
Action Bronson - Blue Chips 2
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2
    Death Grips - Government Plates
Dom Kennedy - Get Home Safely
    Lil Wayne - Dedication 5
    Migos - Y.R.N.
    J.Cole - Truly Yours 1 & 2
    Meek Mill - Dreamchasers 3
    Lizzo - Lizzobangers
Ghostface Killah - Twelve Reasons to Die
Black Milk - No Poison No Paradise
    Young Fathers - TAPE TWO

And i'm sure there are plenty more

Not sure if it's the most defining or important, but these still get a fair amount of spins from me

Balls, forgot to ask for 2000s classic recs. Hit me up with some quick and I’ll get a poll up tomorrow afternoon.

Maybe Phrenology or Game Theory should be on there after Malik B’s passing...?

he wasn't in the group in the 2000's?

We could do Things Fall Apart and Phrenology/Game Theory and cover all the bases

First four albums, I don’t actually remember if one of those was in the 00s lol

Actually yeah, that’s a good idea. He’s on a few tracks in the mid 00s, but probably best to do one from the 90s in a couple of weeks.

Let’s pick a woman this round, I nominate Lil Kim’s The Naked Truth and Trina’s Diamond Princess

EDIT: The Naked Truth of course, not Hardcore, though that would be a great 90s pick
