I guess for me I was thinking of songs that are like, intentionally written as starting off points rather than just great tracks. Cause every single one above this post is a winner.

 

That was my mindset too, songs that are both great in and of themselves but also work really well as album-openers or tracks that set the pace for the rest of the album.

 

The new Valkyrie album is amazing especially if you miss Pete's guitarwork in Baroness.

 

Another contender for best opener is Maze of Torment by Morbid Angel. That riff playing backwards before it starts is pretty eerie

 

Do you mean Immortal Rites? Maze of Torment is the 4th song on Altars of Madness.

That "maze of Torment!" line is so damn catchy

 

I mean Maze of Torment is my favorite Morbid Angel song so no complaints here.

 

definitely gonna check this one out, I loved the last Valkyrie album. And much as I like Gina and am blown away by her virtuosity, I do miss Pete in Baroness haha.

 

Currently giving this a listen. Absolutely feral, fast, churning knuckle-headed shit. Love it.

 

In regards to greatest opening metal tracks I love to imagine a pantera fan that picked up the newest pantera album and heard Cowboys from Hell. A wild departure form their previous records. This is assuming they had fans prior to Cowboys From Hell which is debateable.
