I think Ill Communication and Black Sunday need some recognition. Things Fall Apart too.

Then there's also Enter The Wu Tang. Which could be argued as one of the most important hip hop albums of the 90's

Every week, I hope someone suggest something I haven't heard yet. I've heard the big tracks off Mr Smith, but not the rest. So i'd definitely be interested in doing that.

Mr. Smith and Big Willie Style are the two Trackmasters produced masterpieces AND famous comeback albums (in LL’s case already his second “comeback” after Mama Said Knock You Out).

Wu-Tang possibly, but most casual genre listeners have heard them. I’m all for Black Star.

I unfortunately think we're seeing what we said we were going to see: a bunch of us posting in there but no real engagement from the rest of the site. I think we should keep doing them just because I like having a classic tape to listen to every week, but it does not seem to be serving the initial purpose

hello, i would like to join this thread and think the weekly threads are a great idea, thanks.

Like I said when this was all first brought up, I don't know if there is one/if we need one. Ya know? This site isn't really as free flowing in terms of moving between threads/genres. At the same time, I'd say almost every single regular poster on the site is more open to different genres than they were on AP. I don't think it's a hip hop problem as much as it is an engagement problem. We (I think) have less regular users on here, and less new users joining up willing to check out new things. People tend to keep to themselves unless it's a huge artist or a controversy (see the Ye thread today).

As nice as it would be to get more engagement from new users, I think we have a sizable enough core as it is, at least enough to justify the presence of weekly classics thread.

yeah, this thread certainly seems bigger than the hardcore/shoegaze/space rock/metal etc. specific threads. it would be weird if there was a weekly classics recurring bit for those threads but it makes sense here.

Fair enough. I just thought the purpose was to get more engagement and people on the site to branch out. But I’m also fine with this as it is. I’ve been discovering a lot of new album from this thread recently.

Someone made classic album threads for other genres, but we decided that would take away from the point of promoting black music.

Oh it absolutely was, and I'd love for posters on here who aren't into the genre to dig into the classics. Even the large chunk of people who post in here who are relatively new to the genre.

Yeah exactly, we only have hip hop and R&B (which I have decided to do less than once a week) classics threads for that reason.

But also this is a vibrant genre and culture and those others are, uh, not.

Your favorite rappers favorite rapper. (This probably isn’t true so much anymore but still... he is responsible for the roots becoming a group!)

    more UGK - Super Tight

return is still one of the best opening tracks ever, across genres. I know riding dirty is thought of as the better album but I’m partial to super tight.

It may be a fruitless task, but maybe we could promote the classics threads in other general threads? Is there a general music thread or maybe a now playing that we could post about it in?

Also, to try and get more involvement and discussion in the classics thread, i'm gonna use @xapplexpiex's idea of putting some questions in the OP that, if you want, you can answer and we can talk about in general. BUT... I have no idea what questions to ask haha. Maybe favourite track? When you first heard it?

I've said it before, but we need a "New Threads thread" lol. Just a single thread that anyone can follow, and anytime a new album thread is created, a link is dropped in there. It would be used for ANY new album thread, so people know the thread exists, including these classics threads.
