Haha wow I did not know that was her

Album rules, second half is especially great. Definitely their moodiest record, feel like it’s gonna be a grower

David Tolomei produced both this album and the Half Waif albums, so it makes sense!

Anyway I wish I was able to review this somewhere, but no one was accepting pitches for obvious, COVID-related reasons. It’s such an interesting record and feels more Nationally than usual at some points - which is weird to say considering this album has “Tranquilizer,” but I stand by it.

I do miss the string arrangements of Relatives in Descent bc “A Private Understanding” and “The Chuckler” still blow me away, but I definitely like the chamber-y horns here too)

Can definitely hear some National-esque moments here.

Standouts so far for me (outside of the singles): June 21- aforementioned National vibes and non stop head bopping, Tranquilizer - song is such a fuzzy, heavy, jam, and Modern Business Hymns - that return at the end is so lovely my god

this may be my favorite album so far this year ngl

Protomartyr doing an Ian Cohen diss is one of the funnier things to happen this year

I like this album a lot. Now I have to dive into the rest of their discography I guess!

    hey you lil piss baby

Gonna do a proper run through their discography soon. I think The Agent Intellect is all I've heard other than this and that would have just been like once sometime around when it dropped.

They’re all really good. This may be my favorite.

    probably would go:

    Success>Under Color>Agent=Relaives>No Passion

Dope Cloud was the whole reason I ever found this band.

"June 21" is insanely good. Dig the whole record a ton but love the contrast on that song.

I got high this past week and sat with some friends and we talked about how Joe Casey/Protomartyr are the Antiberninger/National

can anyone recommend some more music like "Worm in Heaven"? I can't get into Nick Cave - the most frequent comparison point - but adore the very detached, resigned tone (wrt: saxophones and a more muscular backing band)

people like to say Protomartyr is derivative but then I ask who else has made a song like that one or "The Chuckler" and get no response.

They combine different post-punk styles in really beautiful ways.

This is a band for whom it’s really hard for me to rank their albums. I think my favorite is either Agent Intellect, Relatives in Descent, or this one. Incredibly consistent. In a certain way, they’ve kind of become my favorite band?

Big funhouse vibes throughout this, with the added horns/woodwinds

    probably my AOTY
