Ok DLed Plex. So how does this work? I scanned all of the movies/shows from my external onto it. And now I see that I can stream things on my other computer. If I unplug this harddrive/my other laptop is not open/on, does the ability to stream stop?

FWIW, You don't have to deal with it if you don't want, if you shoot me a Drive link via PM I'll download it and upload it to Plex then give you a Plex login so you can access it.

But yees, your Laptop needs to be on for it to be able to stream.

Ah. But yeah, you need your PC running / HD plugged in for it to work.

Mind PMing me a login? I'm not sure if I'll even use it tbh, but I am curious just to see how Plex works :-)

Not sure if I have many videos to contribute, I'll have to dig through my laptop. I think I might have Big Hero 6?

Plex is absolutely unreal! I’ve wasted so much time torrenting something and then transferring to usb and then it doesnt even play on my Ps4. This streamlines everything and makes it so much easier

this is exactly why I started using Plex. My method used to be download, transfer to USB stick, put stick in Blu-ray player (Sony, like your PS4) and half the time it doesn't play. I found out that most of the times they wouldn't play because the audio format wasn't supported, so I have another program that converts the audio to something that is recognized.

So yeah, being able to just simply add a file to a folder on my computer to watch it on the TV... great change

Finished Supergirl Season 5 and, yikes, I did not like that cliffhanger ending at all. Otherwise another strong season. I was reading on when the show would be back, and apparently the most recent Arrowverse seasons were cut short due to quarantine? I mean, obviously that's the right call. Just feels like Supernatural Season 4, which was shorter due to the writers' strike at the time and also had a sort of cliffhanger. (Also, Supergirl will have an even greater delay... because Melissa is preggers!)

I was watching Batwoman on my PC in my room because HBO Max isn't on Roku, but then I remembered I also have a PC hooked up to the TV... Gonna finish that up next. Not a great season so far, and Ruby left, so idk if I'll stick around after S1. I do like that Javicia will be playing an entirely new character, though.

    EXACTLY THIS!

I eventually bought a laptop specifically to keep hooked up to my TV via HDMI so I wouldn't have to worry about this anymore, but with PLEX, it's still easier/better.

Can you get 4k on Plex like you can with Netflix? That was always my reservation. That and I don't know if I'd ever use it. Between Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, and D+, there's so much content.

Anyone watching Barkskins? It’s on Hulu. Pretty good thus far, and it’s only 8 eps.

According to their support page, the answer is "yes" for direct play if it fits the following criteria, and a matter of whether or not your smart device supports it. Otherwise, it gets scaled down to 1080p :
    • Container: MP4
    • Resolution: 3840×2160 or smaller
    • Video Encoding: HEVC (H.265)
    • Video Frame Rate: 30fps
    • Video Bit Depth: 8
    Edit

There seems to be two separate ways of playback - direct play, and direct stream. Not sure I understand the difference tbh but direct stream sounds less restrictive than that

  21. Finished Giri / Haji and I really really enjoyed it. I had zero expectations. Heard about it because Justin long was talking about it on his podcast. It's funny because he is the worst part of the show lol. But I definitely recommend it.
