Fassbender is near unparalleled on the “great actors who consistently choose horrible projects” scale

mcavoy can be great when he wants to and might choose even more poorly somehow

Christian Bale chooses a lot of garbage.

I haven’t seen all his movies but man, how long has it been since he was in a truly great movie? Feels like 10-15 years or something.

I wouldn’t count actors with decades of experience who decide to just start coasting and doing mostly obvious bullshit. Fassbender has ostensibly been in his prime for the past decade

Wouldn't it make more sense to do that with a big universally popular movie rather than an indie darling?

It’s a small art house theater, and they only need to sell 25 tickets. I imagine it won’t be that hard.

Punch-Drunk Love is one of a handful of films that I saw in high school that showed me what movies could be. It will always have a special place for me, even if There Will Be Blood and The Master are "better" films.

I wonder what the first movie to open those worlds up was for everybody here.

Mine is either Zodiac or The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I was 20 when they came out and had always loved movies but those are pretty much perfect and just blew me away.

The Departed led me to Scorsese, that and his filmography taught me about how to read cinema as an art form and identify filmmaking techniques and how they’re effective. Also Clerks tapped into the idea of a film being a personal statement from a director. But I continuously find films that change how I think about movies. Chantal Akerman was big for me.

Actually, mine was probably Adaptation. I saw it a few years after it came out. That one is perfect, too.

Mine was The Graduate without a doubt. My family had it on VHS and it was the first time I ever watched something that made me aware of the actual art behind making a film. Just blew me away. Now it’s super tainted by Dustin Hoffman being a major creep, but it will always be important to me as a starting point for finding so many favorites.
