I mainly give 4s to films I watch and enjoy. 4.5s to ones that leave a mark after a bit and rewatches

 

I should probably go back and rerate some classics that I’ve had time to sit with.

 

yea I feel that. Same thing happened to me with a few folks & I respect their discomfort enough to shut up.

 

Really shocked to see Shazam & Detective Pikachu, two definitively "pretty good" films, get called out from that list instead of Dark Phoenix.

Granted, I personally quite enjoyed & love defending the beautiful mess that is Dark Phoenix & would agree that it's better than Joker... but, still. Would've expected that to be more controversial than the other two, lol.

 

The first solo Wolverine movie is the only bad X-Men movie. The rest range from decent to amazing.

 

To be fair, I’d call out more movies on that list if I’d actually watched them, but some, like Dark Phoenix, looked so bad in the trailer that I never indulged haha

 

Dark Phoenix is a lackluster film and Zimmer’s score surprisingly didn’t do much for me, but I honestly expected worse and found it to be entertaining. There are moments in the film (Hank and Xavier dinner table talk, Erik’s confrontation with Jean) that could be placed into good X-Men films and they wouldn’t feel out of place. The Frank Quitely inspired costumes were much appreciated, too.

 

Apocalypse is horrifically bad.

 

I’m gonna rewatch Shazam tonight aren’t I? Goddamn 2020. You weird.

yeah I enjoyed Shazam quite a bit.

 

Shazam was awful and the only part I remember was when the kid said “it’s night time, all the bad guys are asleep or on drugs” because I truly guffawed when I heard it

 

I thought Shazam looked terrible.

 

Shazam! is probably the second best "DCEU" or whatever film after Birds of Prey. It's an incredibly charming film with some strong laughs, superheroics, & heart. A little overlong, with some tedious villain stuff, but otherwise really solid & heartwarming. Zachary Levi rules as Shazam, & I love the family dynamic.

Granted, being an adopted person from a family with a history of adoption & fostering probably makes me a tad biased, lol.

 

I almost watched Shazam on a flight to Japan but decided on Venom instead. I also watched The Favourite and Mission: Impossible.

 

Venom fucking rules, so good choice.

 

That is a long flight for only three movies.

 

I took breaks in between movies and listened to podcasts or played Nintendo. The flight back, I mostly slept.

 

Agreed. Shazam! Is just a real fuckin good movie.

 

funny thing is I got Shazam confused with Kazaam. sooooo my bad. haha

 

The reason I made the comparison is because too many people think this is an incredible Joaquin performance - I point to his PTA collaborations and more specifically The Master as an example of when he was used to his full potential in another oddball character study
