It's important.

 

I think what I'm trying to say is, as long as Sony is focused on selling games and consoles rather then services, their priority is to outsell Microsoft in terms of units. Microsoft on the other hand can sell fewer Xbox units, because their whole thing is selling GamePass (and soon their streaming service) on whatever Microsoft (and maybe soon non-Microsoft) machine fits your lifestyle. First party games of course still play a role in that, but they play a bigger role in Sony's (and Nintendo's) strategy.

But again, the average gamer buys very few games, and most of them are second party. CoD, GTA and Madden are more important than any first party game. That's why launch prices etc. and the resulting momentum are most important. It's also why Microsoft is going the subscription route.

 

As someone who had a ps3 instead of a 360, I remember nobody who owned a 360 giving a shit about Sony's first party games.

Of course they didn't, when you have to justify your hundreds of dollars purchase of a game console, you have to defend your console choice to the death regardless of how good the games on other consoles appear to be.

 

These same people bought ps4s because of the cheaper price and "Microsoft won't let me play used games." I agree with moose that it doesn't really matter to a mainstream audience.

 

Games are good.

 

If first-party games don't really matter to mainstream audiences then Microsoft just wasted a ton of cash buying up all those studios over the last couple years. Somebody should have probably told them lol.

 

Sony exclusives were the whole reason I got a PS3 lol(I had a 360 first)

 

There is also another thing at play here: Microsoft and Sony make very different games. Especially this generation, Microsoft has been way more about live/service games. This also ties on to the narrative about the generation, because many vocal core gamers as well as a lot of people in games media happen to prefer the story focused games Sony makes rather than the live games Microsoft makes. But those live games have a big audience too and Microsoft made a lot of good ones this generation. Also, for the industry it is pretty healthy that they have a different focus, I think.

 

Nothing more disappointing than when you meet someone and they saying they're a gamer, and then you find out they only play fifa and COD

Yeah it is a good thing. I want Microsoft to have a strong first-party lineup. Competition is good!

These are more of the people I'm talking about. They're just gonna buy the cheaper box or wherever their friends are (which is less of a thing with crossplay becoming more prevalent)

 

You keep acting like I said it wasn't important. It's just not as important as some people think it is. If Microsoft had made the exact same games Sony made and vice versa this last gen, but the consoles would have launched the way they launched in reality, Sony still would have outsold Microsoft.

Also, Microsoft has the money do to try out different things at the same time and see what works basically. The streaming service could tank after all.

 

I had both consoles and 360 definitely had the better exclusives. Uncharted 2 and Demon’s Souls were good though.

I'm aware of what you're saying. I'm saying it is as important as people think it is, and Microsoft agrees with me. If they thought it wasn't important for them to compete harder with Sony in the first-party games space, they wouldn't have spent the money to acquire all those studios, regardless of how easy it was for them to shell out the cash. It's very important to their strategy going into next-gen, just as much as undercutting Sony on price appears to be as well. They're expending a lot of effort to end the narrative that their first-party offerings are weaker than Sony's and they wouldn't be doing that if it wasn't very important to them.
