I think a lot of those games won’t be what some people expect. They’ll make a lot of games as a service.

Taking a look at all their studios:

    343 Industries - Halo Infinite

Compulsion Games - Could announce something. We Happy Few was bad but maybe with a bigger budget they could do something cool

Double Fine - Maybe announces something they've been working on alongside Psychonauts 2

    inXile Entertainment - Wasteland 3

Mojang Studios - Could announce another Minecraft Spin-off

Ninja Theory - making Hellblade 2

Obsidian Entertainment - The Outer Worlds just came out last year so I doubt they have anything to announce

Playground Games - Maybe announces that fable game they're rumored to be working on

Rare - Maybe they have something new to show because there's no way all their resources are going to fucking Battletoads

The Coalition - Gears 5 just came out so probably nothing from them

The Initiative - maybe a teaser of whatever they're doing

    Turn 10 Studios - Forza

Undead Labs - More State of Decay?

I feel like the world has moved on from Halo. Like is Halo a system seller in the way it once was? I can't name any of my friends that are Xbox players that actually care about it to the extent that they're taking it into consideration for their next console. I feel like relying on the tried and tested Halo for the beginning of the generation might be a misstep.

It still has a huge online player base. It’s definitely a “GamePass seller”. That’s what matters to them.

I'm sure they will. They still need strong first-party offerings to entice people into their ecosystem, and that needs to be a core part of their messaging going forward.

I’ve said this before but I think core gamers overrate the importance of first party games when it comes to selling consoles to mainstream gamers (Nintendo being the exception). I don’t think the 360 “won” because of first party games and I don’t think the PS4 “won” because of first party games. Also, people gravely underestimate how well they each did when they were “losing”.

In reality, the 360 and the PS4 both "won" because of the momentum they gained early on, mostly by launching cheaper. That's pretty much it. That is also the reason why neither are telling us the price and why Microsoft is apparently launching a cheap model right away.

Fair enough. I know a lot of people that are buying an Xbox and will also buy Halo. I just don't know anyone that is buying an Xbox because of Halo, if that makes sense. It's seems to be in the same sort of area that Call of Duty is in - millions will buy it, but no one (that I know) is buying a £500 box to be able to play it. But if Microsoft see its value in Gamepass, then that makes sense. Gamepass is an incredible deal.

But the perception coming off of the current generation is that Sony "won" in no small part because of how strong their first-party games were. And all the mainstream gaming press talks about is how strong Sony's stable of first-party studios is and how Microsoft's first-party lineup was weak and marred by cancellations and lackluster releases this generation. It's the narrative right now whether or not it's fair or makes sense. And even during the 360/PS3 generation, mainstream games media were talking about how Sony's first-party games were the main reason to own a PS3 over a 360.

It's always going to be a talking point at the end of the day and Microsoft is clearly positioning itself to try and change that narrative. Whether or not that's something anyone thinks they need to do, it's undeniable that they are in the process of doing it. So it must be important to them.

That and Microsoft definitely messed up with their messaging. It even got to the point that Fallon made remarks on how you couldn't play used games.

I mean "won" in terms of unit sales. The narrative you're talking about is a whole other thing. It's also more of a core gamer thing. The average console gamer only has a handful of games and most if not all of them are second party.

Yeah which is why I said "mostly". They made some other sloppy mistakes too. As did Sony when launching the PS4.

I'm just saying that you might not think having a strong first-party lineup is important, but Microsoft definitely does.

I'm not saying it's not important at all, I'm saying core games overestimate its importance. I do however think that it is somewhat more important for Sony than it is for Microsoft, until Sony makes the pivot towards being more of a service provider too, which they will at some point.

I think that Microsoft spending the money to acquire so many high-profile studios means that they see it as extremely important for themselves. I think for that reason core gamers aren't necessarily overestimating the importance of having strong first-party games. It's right in line with Microsoft's own business strategy.
