Santa Barbara Ellie works for me because she's almost a completely different person at that point. In Seattle she wants revenge but the main goal of their journey is to find Tommy. As they move closer and she realizes how close she is to finding Abby she finally gives in. In Santa Barbara she has chosen revenge over a family with Dina. She's traveling alone so theres no conflict with anyone else. ND feeds into this by giving you objectively terrible people to kill with a powerful new weapon.

 

Much like Walt in Breaking Bad constantly saying he's doing horrible things "for his family", the whole time the player is acutely aware that Ellie is not actually motivated by finding Tommy. That's what she tells everyone else (and herself), but it isn't really her motivation. It's pure revenge throughout the whole game.

 

She straight up chooses to not go with Jesse to save Tommy so that she can get to the Aquarium, it’s pretty clear what she wants

 

I don't think it's revenge. I think it's regret.

 

Right, I'm just saying that I don't think that moment was a turning point for her, I think it was just the first time she admits her real motivations to someone other than herself.

 

Oh for sure I was getting at the idea that the priority had always been Tommy until Santa Barbara

 

or until the moment Ellie chooses to go after Abby instead of going after Tommy

 

she just loves choking dudes too much.

 

Why else have those arms, if not to choke people out?

 

Was Tommy ever the priority for Ellie though? She was gonna go by herself, then she was gonna go with Tommy but he just went ahead in hopes that Ellie would stay. Maybe she told Maria she was only going to help get Tommy back safely, but seemed pretty clear that Ellie wasn’t gonna go and leave unfinished business.

 

Tommy was just the excuse to convince Maria to let them go

 

I’m currently in Seattle day one and goddamn, the landscaping of this game has definitely captivated me like horizon zero dawn did

When you write over 100 songs, not including ones that didn't make it to the albums, multiple projects, etc and then add the decades on top of that, it makes a lot of sense.

The second the leak happened I put my blinders on and managed to avoid any information about this game (aside from the guitar videos) until I beat it. Just did that a couple hours ago and reading through this thread it’s funny how negative reactions were to the leaks compared to reactions to the actual game.

Holy fuck this was astonishingly good. My wife watched as I played because she watched the first one a bunch on YouTube, during the last fight while Ellie is drowning Abby she just kept saying “Jesus Christ can’t you stop this, I can’t believe they’re really killing her”. We both breathed a sigh of relief when Ellie let go.
gonna continue avoiding most conversations around this game now!

What were the actual leaks? I never read them prior to playing the game and now I can't seem to find them anywhere.

 

who abby is and what the main accelerant of the plot is. it gets several things wrong about the meat of the game and especially the ending though. my guess is they just saw a few images and tried to stretch them for an entire plot

i remember the apparent ending that the leaks revealed made a lot of people angry, what did they get wrong about it?

 

i don’t remember the specifics exactly, but it had one of them killing the other i think

 

Oh maybe it had Abby killing Ellie? That seems like it would make people mad.
