Can't believe they're waiting for the 23rd to have their first-party showcase.

Microsoft has to know that they need to kill it with this showcase after what happened last time so at least we can expect it to have some bangers. Maybe whatever The Initiative is working on?

 

I expect to learn what almost every one of their 15 first-party studios is currently working on. I think they need to prove that all those acquisitions have made them worth paying attention to, and the only way to do that is to tell us what's coming, even if the games are a year or two out.

Halo will be a big focus though, of course.

They’re not really in a position to hold stuff back, especially after that horrible May showcase. They need to prove to people that their first-party offerings can compete with Sony’s, playing coy with what they show right now isn’t the best idea.

Also, I don’t know how much stuff is actually going to be way, way out. They bought a lot of these studios while they were already between games, so odds are almost all of them actually do have stuff to show.

 

I like this guy, but I 1000% disagree for two main reasons.

1. The past few Halo games have been lackluster and soiled the franchise a bit. I think it's shifted people's expectations that if Infinite is great that's a nice surprise and if it's mediocre, it's just what we're used to for the last couple entries.

2. Xbox has evolved so much beyond just one flagship game. Their gamepass, dedication to backwards compatibility and online infrastructure are the best of the three consoles. They also have branched out and shown more interest in being "just a Halo machine". They've invested so much time and money into these new studio acquisitions.

I feel like it weighs more on having a steady stream of quality first parties than just Halo.

 

Xbox has been doing pretty well lately because of GamePass etc. They’re not as focused on a stream of first party releases as the others are. They don’t see themselves that way, I think. That’s not to say none are coming. They obviously bought those studios to make games. For GamePass.

Anyway, for Microsoft GamePass > Halo

 

All Microsoft has to do is JFG for an hour straight and then all the gamers will be JFGing until their JF’s can no longer G.

 

That's all I need from them

 

They bought all those studios in order to change the way people see them and become more focused on a stream of first-party releases, though. Of course those games are going to be made for GamePass, but they need the games to get people to buy in to that ecosystem in the first place. If they thought they didn't need marquee first-party titles to sell Xbox consoles and GamePass subscriptions, they wouldn't have spent all that money buying those studios.

 

I have such little faith that these games will be good

 

Halo would probably either have to reinvent itself or just be literally upgraded multi a la Halo 1 & 2

for me to care about it at all again
