  1. Oh I love it now. It wouldn't make my reranking list though, whereas their final EP would for 2014.

And wow, I can't believe I forgot about Emery. I don't listen to In Shallow Seas We Sail often these days, but it was in my rotation a lot during that summer. And The Swellers! And Therefore I Am, which I fell in love with one year later. And Consider The Thief, which was compared to Thrice a lot. And Set Your Goals... okay maybe not that one.

Going to revisit Closure In Moscow and The Almost. It took me years to fully get into the more Foo Fighters-y alt rock of the latter.

Hmm I don't really remember much of that year. After hastily looking up some lists on the internet, I do remember some albums I loved that apparently came out in 09t

    Wale - Attention Deficit
Ghostface Killah - Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City
    Fashawn - Boy Meets World
    Skyzoo - The Salvation
Souls Of Mischief – Montezuma’s Revenge
    Tanya Morgan – Brooklynati
Method Man & Redman – Blackout!
    K’naan – Troubadour
Mariah Carey - Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
Lee Fields & the Expressions - My World
Anthony Hamilton - The Point of It All
    Jay Z - Blueprint 3

I don't remember listening to any guitar based music at the time, except for the Green Day album, which I liked well enough.

  6. Oh I forgot about Paper Route. They never reached the heights of that album, but the follow ups were solid, despite the line up changes and the gaps.

wow, forgot about K'naan! What happened to him, is he still making music? I remember him being pretty cheesy at times but in an endearing way, he had some really cool stuff

Tegan & Sara took my #1 spot in 2009. I didn’t start listening to An Horse until a couple years later, but if I were to re-rank my list now, Rearrange Beds would be on top, Sainthood would move to second place, and We Were Promised Jetpacks’ These Four Walls would be in third.

@Jason Tate I know music is subjective so I totally respect your opinions, but I don't understand how you left Mayday Parade's A Lesson In Romantics off of the 2007 re-ranking and pretty much ripped their style a new one, yet you put the horrendous Love Drunk in the top 10 for 2009. I know it's different years, but still. ALIR is MUCH better than Love Drunk imo.

Thanks for doing these lists by the way.

  15. The answer is I don't think Mayday Parade are good at writing catchy songs, and Boys Like Girls (or, specifically, Martin and Sam Hollander) are very good at writing catchy songs. It's also probably why the latter remains one of the most sought after songwriters and producers in the entire world and the only people that can name a Mayday Parade song are in this thread.

Jason, these have been so fun for me to read over the past few weeks! So many trips down memory lane. Every time I read one, I have the desire to make my own list, but 2009 was such a defining year for me (personally and musically), I couldn't NOT do one this time around. Looking back, I honestly think it might be my favorite year of music, period. So many albums on this list I consider my all-time favorites.

This was the year I graduated high school and the year I discovered The Dangerous Summer, two events that would continue to have a lasting impact on me a decade later. Reach for the Sun was my favorite and most listened-to album that year, and the band would cement their place as my Favorite Band™ with War Paint.

I've seen TDS live countless times over the years. I became friends with the members. I became friends with many other fans who I continue to call close friends to this day. I had tough conversations about some of their behavior and decisions with myself, my friends, and the band members themselves. I've had the opportunity to design album artwork, posters, and merch for the band in the years since their reunion. I don't say this lightly, but this band has become intertwined with my life in so many different ways that I sort of associate them with my identity. I haven't loved every album as much as others (RFTS > War Paint > Mother Nature > Golden Record > IYCOKMA > S/T), but this band's continued existence means a heck of a lot to me.

Anyway, thanks for reading, here's my retrospective ranking of 2009, using parameters similar to Jason's.
    1. The Dangerous Summer – Reach for the Sun
    2. Manchester Orchestra – Mean Everything to Nothing
    3. fun. – Aim & Ignite
    4. Relient K – Forget and Not Slow Down (easily their best album imo)
    5. Mansions – New Best Friends
    6. Thrice – Beggars (this holds up SO well; their best album imo)
    7. Fireworks – AIHTOIMOC
    8. The Antlers – Hospice
    9. The Swellers – Ups & Downsizing (still waiting on a repress)
    10. Local Natives – Gorilla Manor
    11. Set Your Goals – TWBTDOA (miss this band so much)
    12. Paper Route – Absence
    13. The Audition – S/T
    14. Say Anything – S/T
    15. Third Eye Blind – Ursa Major (underrated in their discography)

  17. Thanks! I'm really glad everyone is enjoying them. Not only cause it's been fun to get back into the swing of a more consistent 'writing' schedule, but it's been a lot of fun to read everyones own thoughts about music and their experiences with it over the years.
