It's been all over Twitter and I'm glad they're being put on blast for this. I hope it sinks the publication but I'm not naive.

I feel like if every site that published something reprehensible was shutdown there'd be no internet

And the non apology is so terrible

How anyone can see this as anything other than a hate crime..I just don't know. It's sickening.

I'd like to think I'm pretty safe in the SF bay area, but I'd be lying if I said I never think about getting beat up/killed as a consequence to transitioning. Hmm. Something to talk to the therapist about today.

While it's very apparent that the Pope and church are not very fond of trans people, I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that he's inciting genocide.

"In the United States, the Catholic Church has now joined the largest Protestant denomination (the Southern Baptist Convention) in the demand to legislate transgender people out of existence. Their ability to do this will very much hinge on what the Supreme Court decides in the next few years when they inevitably hear a case which decides whether transgender people are protected by civil rights laws which include sex as a protected characteristic. However, the Church’s stance has two significant implications for people other than transgender people in the US."

eh, considering this section of the article, I wouldn't really call it a stretch.

Maybe I read too much into things, but really, it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to believe that most transphobes, from TERFS to the Pope to the people who say that they'd kill a trans woman if they ever saw one go into a women's restroom, ultimately want the extinction of trans people.

I still think comparing the implications of the article to something like Rwanda is inaccurate. The term genocide is reserved for war-crime level mass-slaughter, edging on extinction. While the way we are treated as a whole is pretty fucked up, it does a disservice to those lost in Rwanda to compare the two (in my opinion).

That's a fair point, and I suppose emotion tends to lead to maybe less-than-accurate word choices. However, I think it goes beyond them simply not being fond of us or treating us poorly. Given the FRC's plan, these people very clearly don't want us to exist whatsoever, and they have a plan for how to go about accomplishing that. They know they can't just round us all up and kill us, so they're taking the legislative route. Idk, I don't really feel I'm articulating myself properly, but that's the best I've got.

When the r/ftm subreddit isn't helping me stay alive/sane and stops being filled with supportive guys in the same situations as me, then I'll believe Reddit is the worst.

Yeah, I feel similarly regarding the various trans subreddits.

It's tough because I do recognize that Reddit is rife with terrible shit, and they don't really seem to do much about that. I mean, even the trans subreddits often get invaded by TERFS and trolls who will down vote posts and say terrible shit (which doesn't last long with how heavily modded those subs tend to be). However, knowing how helpful it was for me and seeing firsthand users going from posting threads about their plans to commit suicide to later posting thank you threads to the subs, it's hard for me to wish that site would just disappear or whatever. Idk.

I'd like to see Reddit do both. By hosting a space fostering discussion, they have a responsibility to protect those spaces. The great thing about the Internet is the way communities come together and find each other. If Reddit doesn't embrace that responsibility and protect its communities across the platform, other websites will and the communities already present should move to support those safer spaces (and they will, because it's safer). That's a big reason I'm active on chorus and not Reddit.

yeah it's funny cuz @Spencer Control actually told me about the subreddit r/bisexual yesterday and i was really glad to see so much support and positivity there.

i also find out a lot of cool info about video games and TV shows i really like as well that i couldn't find anywhere else.

much like social media and message boards, there's great stuff and terrible stuff. but reddit seems to have the worst of it - it's a culmination of its popularity and lack of moderation.

there just needs to be much stricter moderation and less tolerance for hate speech and harassment, as i will always repeat. on there and on fb/twitter/instagram.

like @Carmensaopaulo said, it's why i'm active on here and not there. i prefer lurking. i also just browse twitter and instagram and don't post, and i don't use FB anymore.

One thing i noticed, too...every since they started seriously trying to monetize that site, they're better about flagging/removing some of the more abhorrent subreddits. Heh.

The smaller subs you get to, the better the communities are. Doesn't mean the site as a whole isn't filled with garbage people because I see that all the time.

No one is denying that. I just don't think it should be removed entirely.

The subreddits that promote white supremacy or objectification of women or whatever are definitely not okay, but I think calling the entire site a "cesspool" is reductive and doesn't address the harassment issue necessarily, there's good and bad like I think any website

awh yay! i'm legit super happy yall have found communities there that are supportive. there definitely are good ones, r/bisexual has usually been on point for me. i wish that all the queer subreddits were actually accepting (in my experience they've missed more times than I am super comfortable with), and that the front page/main community didn't upvote literal white supremacist shit to the front every day, and also that the mods actually did something about all of the awful, violent communities that fester on their website that they have allowed to thrive. more on this below.

this is a bigger problem than a lot of redditors, especially if they really buy into reddit's sense of humor and libertarian politics, what you'll find is that shitty "attack helicopter" jokes that just exist to mock trans people, or fat-hating rhetoric, or anti-Muslim politics - those will start to leak into other communities, even conscious ones, because reddit is so porous. when you're in a community, you're only a degree away from whatever those other people are in - and that gets even closer when you run the risk of getting trolled or turfed like most progressive spaces do.

yah see as i said above - the problem is a combo of toxic community sense of "humor", selfish politics, and lax moderation.

it's shameless - they told Ellen Pao last summer to clean up the shitshow subs of r/fatpeoplehate and r/coontown and then threw her off the glass cliff knowing the entire website would martyr her (seriously she still gets widely lambasted for things she had nothing to do with), because the media and ad buyers had started catching the scent of the fetid communities and being uncomfortable with that. even now they don't do anything about the subs that have popped up in response to those bans.

this is true, provided those subs aren't awful terf or white supremacist or the like territories. like i said above, the shit leaks more than a lot of people on the website realize, and they end up subconsciously eating it up

well like i said, i'd argue that the porous and unmoderated nature of the site lends itself to poisoning the whole website - except perhaps the very small communities dedicated explicitly to progressive movements. but you're right, it is probably unhelpfully reductive not to expand more on that.

to summarize - im really glad that yall - and even i - find some good subs to identify with. but i think the website has systemic problems of tolerance of intolerable behavior and interconnectivity that will ultimately drive it into the ground (or at least drive out all of the humane users), and it leaves a far more bitter taste in my mouth than anything positive sadly.
