As a British person I think it’s best I don’t question my roots

All I know is I have French family and folk who fled to America. Supposedly one of my relatives got burned at the stake in Salem but literally everyone says the same and probably got the info from the same bullshit website. The witch part anyway

The best is when they have slight indigenous or African lineage and you know the reason is a major bummer

Technically its listed as a community from the English stuff. I will admit some of it was very cool to see at first, and then it starts to sink in what probably went down and uh...
like theres books of Long Island history and some people were granted land on the island to "settle" so pretty sure we all know what that meant

If the story you were told was that they were specifically burned at the stake then it was probably just made up by a relative, because that didn’t happen in Salem.

Also yeah, learning about your history and family can be great and also terrible. My family has so many stories that make me feel connected to them or like I’ve gained some insight about myself, but others are just horribly horribly sad and upsetting.

I have Ukrainian white nationalist and orthodox Christian roots.........last night I found an article about how they did a lot of eugenics in the 1920s and got so upset ha

My dad’s side. Like a mix of Irish and Scottish, favoring the latter. And then I forget my moms side because that family sucks and don’t really matter anyway

Lmao there you go then. I wasn’t told it, it’s on some ancestry website. Completely unrelated but I have Welsh family who claim they are ‘white witches’. We don’t associate with them.

My family don’t actually discuss ancestry at all - they genuinely have no interest and seemingly have next to no knowledge on it!

My grandmother claimed we were related to Alexander Hamilton mostly because that was a surname in the family at one point. We're not.

However my skin is darker than the rest of my family so I’ve always been confused

I think even Ryan is an Irish name hailing from Rowan or something?

Lmao wow. Always wonder where these stories began. I legitimately do have a famous person in the family but we’re far detached and it’s an actor in the British soap Coronation Street. An old lady. She’s awful in it.

    Oh nooooooo.

I’ve mentioned it a lot of times, but my mom’s side is what I have always cared about and identified with. Her mother being first-generation American with so many continued ties to Romania always felt tangible and important to us all instead of just a vague connection from online research.

Of course speaking of that, my dad likes to talk about his Irish or English “roots” and get all weepy, but when I did that genealogy research years ago for fun I traced his family back and they had been in like North Carolina or the surrounding area for hundreds of years, lol. There’s no concrete information on where anyone in his family was originally from or what their names even were.

I have olive skin even though my entire family is eastern European but apparently my grandfather who came here from Austria did too

Idk about name origins, I meant like I've seen a lot of the same town names in England vs New England in the records. And we see our choices in usernames

Oh man. I kind of disconnected with my culture after I got to high school, and now even more. I actually have some Romanian traits and my family has told me the story that when I was 3, we were at a train station and “Romanian Gypsies“ (their words...not mine) asked to buy me because I had long straight dark hair and tan skin lol

I can actually play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon in real life through my family, which always makes me laugh. I also used to be even more tenuously related to another celebrity through marriage, but that was only for a few years.
