a Facebook friend of mine had posted some fairly graphic details of encounters she had with Austin carslile when she was younger, and said that ultimately he was going to come after her with lawyers, so she never came forward (this was around 2013ish and the things had happened years prior, idk how old they were when it happened, but probably around 18)

i met the OM&M singer that was in the band for a couple months when Austin first quit maybe like 10 years ago? this guy had already left the band and Austin had rejoined when I met him, but I said something like “I heard a lot of shit about your old band’s singer eh” and he basically replied “you don’t even know half of what that guy has done, fuck him”.

if someone like me who has zero connection to any sort of scene knows about all of this, I can’t imagine just how many stories exist about this guy or how many young people he’s hurt

It was mentioned in a discord I’m in that Austin would message girls on Kik that were underage and once he got nudes he would give them his login information, which deleted convos once the girl logged out of her own Kik. Fucking gross man and his overly religious facade is gross too.

I'm asking this question out of ignorance after I've attempted to read a couple articles from Time and Vox as well as posts on reddit and this forum: What does it mean exactly to say "cancel culture isn't real/doesn't exist?" From what I've gathered, since there are rich individuals or certain high profile individuals who have been able to continue to have successful careers or platforms after victim's voices are heard, it isn't a real thing.

Is that the argument or is there more to it? I mean, aren't there examples of people who have lost their platform? BN/JL - while that BN subreddit is still active, he'll never be welcomed back to the community, right?

It's very difficult to find a clear answer. Or I just suck at googling.

Basically and the few people to lose their platform deserved it

Also what people think on Twitter doesn't dictate anything

OM&M trying to play the they didn't know card, even though this was going around before he was in that band

  7. I could be very off base but I’m extremely positive there was rumors of him being a piece of shit before he ever even joined OM&M

  9. bn would almost certainly be selling out shows right now if the jl stuff didn’t come out when they were calling it quits anyway

Cancel culture is so overblown. If you are (Generally) a good person who made a fuck-up, you’ll get lambasted for a few weeks and then land on your feet. People who are actively shitty land on their feet regardless. Idk.

Attack Attack! called Austin out on a MySpace bulletin board post years ago because, I believe, there were internet rumors he would be rejoining the band. They pretty much put that to rest along with sharing why they would never bring him back, including mentioning that he treated the band members like shit and that he slept with anyone that moved, including underage women. Of course, Austin only got bigger while Attack Attack! fell apart. Good times.

Brand New is choosing not to tour. If they announced a show, it would 100% sell out very quickly. So no, I would not say they were “effectively cancelled.”

Yeah Brand New was breaking up anyway, that’s not a case of being cancelled. If they wanted to come back they definitely could. I see praise of them constantly outside of this site.

I think Bn is an interesting example though
Because although they could absolutely sell out a show or tour there would be a plethora of negative voices and protestors and people unhappy. That’s why they decided not to tour again. They made that decision based on the backlash. Thus they are ‘cancelled’ imo. It was the backlash that cancelled them even if it wasn’t lack of supporters. Louis ck, r kelly, Chris brown, have all had movements against them and backlash and negative press and they don’t care they continue to come back. They refuse to be cancelled AND they have all the supporters absolving them they can lean back on.

as I was saying last week in the other thread during this discussion, there are many different ways to use the word ‘cancelled’
There are different levels to it.

I’m also reminded of an article I read (maybe it was even posted here?? I don’t remember) about the idea of “scandal insurance” that Hollywood has developed and they noted how interesting it was that there was no formula for knowing how a scandal was going to affect someone ie: there was no way to tell if something would ‘cancel’ someone or not. The article specifically used Chris brown as an example of someone who kept coming back despite every scandal thrown his way which goes against all odds.
It’s interesting to think about because it’s true. There seems to be no real rhyme or reason for how these things play out.

I don't get people who say "fuck this scene" or "this scene sucks". There's definitely a problem with shitty white men abusing their power in bands, but also what scene are we talking about? Pop punk/metalcore/hardcore? Because there are a ton of great bands who shouldn't be put under a blanket statement like that (female pop punk/metalcore/hardcore bands, Hispanic pop punk/metalcore/hardcore bands, black pop punk/metalcore/hardcore bands, etc.). I personally think if someone you like is called out for something and they either refuse to address it, address it poorly, or don't seem sincere in how they handle it then you just have to stop supporting them individually. There's literally no shortage of bands out there deserving of peoples support, and your time would be better spent supporting those bands.

I was talking to my friends about the ADTR/SWS allegations today, and one of them said "I mean, if you're gonna be a groupie, fucking commit, don't p*ssy out" and I had to like, explain her why that was so problematic, and why band members shouldn't fuck with their fans.

Believe it or not, she admitted she was wrong, and apologized, but HOLY SHIT, I can't believe people still have that take in 2020.

the scene is toxic AF and has proven itself over and over. “Fuck this scene” is an apt reaction.
