Right. A community is incentivized to enforce laws that benefit the community.

The problem is that a community is not a monolith. What benefits the majority of a community can be determinant to the minority of the community. And so simply relying on the community to enforce laws that are beneficial to the community makes easy for the community to enforce laws that simply benefit the majority and the expense of others.

Sometimes, such as ensuring a fairer distribution of taxes, that's clearly a good thing.

Other times, such as banning trans people from using the proper bathrooms, its clearly not.

This is just a different conversation than whether the police are needed. What you’re describing has been better protected through equal rights protections in the Constitution and civil rights court cases, federal funding withholdings, and even social pressures (such as when sports leagues or entertainers refuse to perform in a city) than it has been through some police force. The police are used instead to enforce those bad laws.

I would just disagree that the kind of discrimination you’re describing ever really benefits a community.

but if those communities decide its a crime for trans people to use the proper bathroom.... they would still have someone trying to enforce those bad laws. so the problem isn't really solved. "equal rights protections" don't do people any good if the community decides not to uphold those protections. and societal pressure requires society as a whole to be informed enough to do the right thing.

do need actual state troopers? maybe not. I certainly never said you did. but you do need some level of law enforcement coordinated through the state and federal levels to ensure communities are actually upholding the law and step in when they won't

but it doesn't matter if you disagree that it benefits the community. you're not the one that makes that decision. community does. and so it could easily decide to do something that you don't think is beneficial

Yeah but nobody is suggesting we remove the ways we already address that like state and federal oversight and legal supremacy of equal protection laws. I’m not sure what the police ever did to help with this type of thing. Seriously it’s fine if you disagree but I don’t think you understand what much of the disbandment or abolition movement is proposing if you think all effective oversight is removed.

hence my original post where I pointed out that relying on the community to handle it on its own was a double egded sword that could do more harm than good and so any solution would need to account for that

So what I see here is that Biden actually wants to increase funding for the police.

And saying "funding for public schools, summer programs, mental health and substance abuse treatment separate from police funding -- so that officers can focus on the job of policing" - this is the most troubling part. Had he said use overbloated police budgets to fund those things, he'd be onto something.

Sad that even Nancy Pelosi gave a way better answer about defunding police than Joe Biden
