Let's just bombard the forum with threads each week. East Coast Essential. West Coast Essential. Southern Essential. International Essential. Nu-School Essential.

Very true. So as much as people have written about those classics a ton maybe it's still important to do those albums. If you're burnt out over them, just don't participate that week I guess.

Again I think that would only weaken this thread without any real benefits. If it were up to me frankly this thread, the R&B thread and the Instrumental Hip Hop thread would be fused anyway lol But I understand why people don’t want to go that far

My point is that I think that the albums that would come up first are the albums that the latter group of thread regulars already knows about to a large extent, so they would profit from talking about some other classic albums for a change. Of course that would maybe make it less attractive to “outsiders”, I get that, but again I doubt they will participate no matter how we do it. But of course people should do it regardless if they want to.

Idk how but we could try and come up with a 500 essential hip hop albums master-list or something lol

If it were up to me, I'd definitely have different threads for different sub genres. But I also agree that it would dilute this thread and may not get used as much.

Immediately like Polo G more than the Gunna album.

So, the classic albums. I was thinking we could go by decade order. Start with an 80's classic, then 90's the week after, 00's after that?

    hey you lil piss baby

Polo G is infinitely better than Gunna imo lol. But that Gunna album slides into a good groove, I like it quite a bit.

Yeah, after my negative reaction post it hit a run of pretty good songs. I'll have to go back to it

So one classic per decade? That’s rough

polo g and gunna did nothing for me, this year in hip hop has been full of albums that just didn't land for me.

that said freddie gibbs may very well have my aoty and i'm excited to get into this rtj record. oh yeah and kari faux put out a great EP that does not get talked about enough

It'll rotate. Give people time with each album. Choosing the album every week? That'll be rough haha

I definitely need to dive into the classics. I listen to more hip hop than most users on here outside of this thread, and the only 90s stuff I listen to is Outkast. Even my knowledge of the 2000s is pretty weak.

If anyone has any suggestions for the 80's album this week, i'm all ears. Would a Beastie Boys album be a good start for everyone?

Also, I may ask for some recs for 00's albums come the time. I'm always willing to give anything a listen and there's a lot from say 2002 to 2010 that I just never gave the time of day to.

I definitely want to contribute to the classics thread. Though most of my "classics" are like j5, immortal technique, hieroglyphics and a bunch of rhymesayers stuff.

If I had to pick five with an eye on diversity rather than my personal favorites, I’d pick:

Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full
    LL Cool J - Radio
    Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique
    N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
2 Live Crew - As Nasty As They Wanna Be

EDIT: But yeah a list without PE and Run DMC is also messed up so again it’s a nightmare. A top 10 would probably be more feasible. So then you’re already ten weeks in for the 80s alone and you’re still kind of on the surface.

Semi-related... There’s a series of critically acclaimed graphic novels called Hip Hop Family Tree. Each volume covers a couple years starting with 1970-1981

2000s is def a blind spot for me when it comes to hip-hop. I do know it was the golden age of free mixtapes on Datpiff.com however
