Feels like Millennials and GenZ are going to be very good partners in political issues for a long time

 

CMPD marched from both sides of the busy street here in town (Charlotte) and fired rubber bullets and teargas grenades at anyone caught in between, blocking off all exists, all while not telling anyone they needed to disperse (we don’t have a curfew). Wish something would come of this but they’re notoriously awful with internal review.

 

If some company or brand only makes a lovey-feely soft statement about feeling sad or RIP George or vaguely wanting some sort of “justice,” fuck em. Anything less than “hold the police accountable for what they have done” is empty bullshit. They know what they’re doing when they don’t mention the police

 

Anyone who tries to do any variation of the game of “are the protests/riots good or bad?” is being played so hard. There are no morals or plans in a riot. It is emotion and chaos. The correct answer is to acknowledge that rioting/looting/arson is bad and upsetting, because it fucking is, then to move the conversation over to who is to ultimately blame for it, and more importantly who can prevent them from happening again, ie police/politicians/people with actual power who have not used it as they should but instead have created a situation where so many people across the country are pushed to the brink like this.

So many people I’ve seen, both liberals and leftists, seem so concerned with proving that protestors are doing the “right” kind of protesting and saying that any looters or violent people are not “their” people. When the reality is that is doesn’t actually matter - it isn’t a “gotcha” if right wingers can show that it’s the “peaceful” protestors causing violence, because they have no real answer for what really matters, which is how to deal with it or prevent it from happening again. Rather than tying themselves into knots trying to shift the blame of anything bad that is happening (which just creates these conspiracy theorists who are obsessed with proving that outside agitators have co-opted their thing, as if any politician would care) they should just focus on the fact this is not an isolated incident and is obviously just bound to happen again in the future unless there’s real change

So many people love quoting MLK’s “riots are the language of the unheard” line without having the most basic sense to just apply it here. Like as if they think it’s just some beautiful artistic rhetoric and not him simply shutting down bad faith arguments by saying “yeah this shit sucks, but complaining that it sucks won’t prevent the next one”

Also I’m pretty sure the person who beat him isn’t exactly moderate either, yeah? Like yes at least people aren’t supporting an open white supremacist anymore, but King was already literally blacklisted by even his own party at this point, so anyone thinking this is sign of some great change are deluding themselves

I went to one of the original Ben and Jerry's shops in Vermont back in September...they had a huge message on their store front about police violence and BLM. They give no fucks, I love it.

 

I think this is quite literally the first thing Boris Johnson has ever done that I support.

Will be interesting to see how that lands with the "Britain for the British" section of his supporters...
