The people that still say this is not as bad as the flu/conspiracy folks are absolutely insane. Got into it with one after they stated the flu has killed more. They like to couple that with casting doubt on the covid-19 numbers.

My favorite part of this exercise with folks is that they have no idea where the death rate/infection fate for the flu comes from and its all projection. The only verified numbers for deaths are for children. Really love pointing out the hypocrisy of it all.

A friend commented on it, saying it’s inaccurate & sharing that car accident death people have been sharing online.

Gave a three paragraph response, trying my best to honor the person & praise the desire for fact checking online (totally not a subtle jab at “plandemic”... lol), while also explaining the statistical likelihood of errors when dealing in numbers that big & how small errors & corrections are common in journalism. Wanting to make it clear that, if a few of the names chosen are mistakes, the thing is still true in the ways that matter.

Then, immediately worried if I came across as too, like, condescending or something, lol.

No response yet, dunno if there will be. Kinda hope there isn’t. But, also really hope it’s taken the right way. (And, hoping small mistakes, misunderstandings, & misinformation doesn’t destroy people’s confidence that this pandemic is real & serious... in spite of all evidence pointing to that battle already being lost.)

I do think that, based on what we’ve been learning about the virus and how it spreads, we should be careful about assuming big spikes from people gathered outdoors. I mean it’s def possible a few people get sick just because of how tightly packed people were on that boardwalk or in some of the other places were seeing. But between the virus dispersing more in the open air and the studies that suggested that sunlight kills it pretty fast, I think we’re more likely to see bigger spikes come July since most states will be in their first or second phases of reopening throughout June, aka more people going into indoor places.

 

No, yeah, I get that, but I’m thinking in terms of the current climate & trajectory of my context. I already saw a decline in mask-wearing this week, when my county was technically in red phase for one more week based on the governor but county leadership didn’t care. Friday then started yellow phase proper (allowing more, albeit still limited, permitted indoor contexts, & masks are technically “recommended” instead of “required”), & a neighboring county is entering green phase soon. Plus, churches are gathering together, which is obviously a high risk context.

 

yeah assuming there’s still some asymptomatic people out there who didn’t get tested in your area, it seems at least somewhat likely that could lead to a few spikes in 2-4 weeks.


Apparently NC had a big spike yesterday but I was unable to find if that was related to number of tests done or not

Every time he says something like this about someone he hired, the next two questions asked should be “well you hired him/thought he was qualified, didnt you?” And then when trump says yeh I thought at the time he was, the next one should be “so you were wrong in your judgement?”

My friend’s mom works in hospice care at a hospital and coronavirus spread pretty badly there. When this started she had 18 patients to take care of, now she only has 6 left. Granted it is hospice, so these people were on their last legs anyway, but that is just awful.

This especially has implications for the summer church camp I lead, though we already canceled our weeklong overnight camps & have been planning on erring towards safety & leaning on online programming (as over abundant as that’s been lately in church circles, lol).

Wonder if I’m gonna have to create a page for our site, w/ feedback from the board, about some of the studies & recommendations we’re basing our decisions on, complete w/ links to cases like this. Though, if we do, we’ll have to be careful how we frame it, for church relationship reasons. But, we’ve already had some questioning, especially after Gov. Wolf released summer camp guidelines that technically allow more than we’d wanna do if we end up in green phase this summer.

 

Would be a bigger thing if they shut up lol, but they keep saying shit and then people hit them with “well what did you think about trump and other republicans saying this insanely racist thing”

 

Not looking forward to the headlines in two weeks after all these idiots are out and about this weekend
