So who gets HBO Max? I utilize a log-in from someone who pays for HBO on Directv.

 

My understanding is that anyone who currently subscribes to HBO GO or HBO Now automatically gets updated to max

According to this site, unless they have Directv premiere (aka the largest package), your friend will likely only have access to HBO Max for a limited time. It says most Directv subscribers will get access for 3 months.
