This album is really a strong argument that pre-release songs shouldn’t exist. I remember a lot of people disliked/were disappointed in ‘Be Afraid,’ (so I purposely didn’t listen) but it’s perfect in the context of the record. Honestly, this may be his album to fits together the best sonically; the sequence and mood is just flawless.

In other news, having given this a first listen, I think this is the best I’ve immediately liked an album of his. I got on the Isbell train at ‘Something More Than Free,’ and he’s always been a guys whose songs truly click three or four times in. But this album clicked immediately. All I wanted to do is hit ‘play’ again.

I just need to say in this space that your review of this is the album review version of a Jason Isbell album. It’s that good. It’s a freaking work of art that helps me appreciate the album that much more. Thank you!

I didn’t like the first 2 tracks released from this at all so I sort of stopped paying attention and never listened to the others, but after listening to the full thing for a few days now, I really dig all of them. Been a casual fan of his before..this is the first record that’s really pulled me in. Guess I need to revisit everything else..ha.

This is my first Jason Isbell album. Not really my type of music, but I am liking it!

  15. Very curious to see how some of the new songs get interpreted in a more intimate setting tonight. I just hope we get an acoustic "Overseas" like the version he played with Sadler on that unplugged tour

I have a horrible confession to make: the line in "Overseas" about the waiter making the young girl cry bugs me. I like the sentiment (that she would stand up and say something about somebody doing something wrong) but the situation just seems backwards. Maybe I'm just defensive as a long-time food service worker, but I'd say the more believable/more sympathetic/better fit for Jason's blue collar stance/past work would be a customer making a server cry.

I was cruising to work this morning at 2 am and when that guitar lick in Overseas I swear I started time traveling. Mother of god that’s a fun riff.
