Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Reunions (May 15, 2020) Album • Page 12

Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by DaydreamNation, Feb 9, 2020.

  1. It's got some great tracks and I love the way it sounds but I agree it's not as good as Purgatory or the slew of unreleased/lightly released songs from the pre-Purgatory era. I think he's got a whole hell of a lot left in the tank though, he's nowhere near having peaked. And his live show is very very good.

I've only ever been a casual Isbell listener, but this was really good on my first listen and I love it on my second.

My only complaint is that I wish "What've I Done . . ." was a couple minutes shorter and he repeated the chorus less (like during the guitar solo). I still really like the song, I just need a radio edit of it.

"What've I Done To Help" has only grown on me more and more, and I already liked the song a lot to begin with.

    It's an earworm, for sure.

That interview with Cory Branan was a fun listen

  9. Thought the Pitchfork review was one of the fairer, level-headed write-ups they've given him. Pleasantly surprised

It’s certainly better than the reviews for his last two.

I only listened to one of the songs released so far, I think maybe the opener? It was fine but I certainly wasn't blown away. But it's Isbell so I still have high hopes I'll enjoy the album.

I'm definitely pumped, the comments in here already, along with all the press, and the singles have me really excited.

I'm guessing the vinyl download cards don't "activate" until tomorrow?

  14. If it was the opener that song is quite different than the rest of the album and I also didnt really love it first couple listens outside the album context

Someone described What've I Done to Help" as the bridge from The Nashville Sound to this album, and I think that describes it perfectly. Definitely an outlier.

all this ranking talk made me rank 50 oasis songs

  17. Okay fine, "Only Children" is the best track he's ever recorded. I said it.

Not ready to go that far yet, but I think it's busted into my top five.

  21. Is there accordion on "Overseas"? Panned to the right and pretty faint but I think it's there

"Cover Me Up" was my top song of the 2010s, so that's a very high bar. Nudging out "Dress Blues" for the five slot is a big accomplishment though.

"Running With Our Eyes Closed" has REALLY grown on me as I've kept listening to the album over the last few days, to the point where I can't even hear why the hell I was saying I thought it was slightly weaker than the songs around it on my first few listens. This album is fantastic. I'm getting to the point where the songs I had already heard don't stick out to me and I can just listen to the whole album smoothly.
