Weezer have shared the new song “Hero” and announced their new album, Van Weezer, has been postponed until further notice.

Hell yes. My kinda Weezer. The two new songs are great. Hope the rest of the album rocks this hard.

I was just getting excited that I hadn't seen any news of this being delayed and here we are...

Can someone who understands the music industry better than me explain why so many albums are being postponed? Aren’t most profits primarily from digital sales and streaming anyway? No disrespect to the artists making these decisions obviously; just want to understand.

  5. At the simplest: tours. New album to promote = big tour. And a tour's where they make the money.

True, but wasn't the Hella Mega tour already sold out. I'm sure that will be rescheduled if it hasn't yet. Green Day released their album in January, months before the tour.

I agree with you Jason, just think in this case, since they cant tour for a while, they should just release it to help fans in a time of need.

  8. Yeah, the album was timed up with the tour. And probably will be again.

Releasing it creates an album in promotional limbo, something never really promoted or given a tour backing to sell, sell merch, launch singles, etc. Someone asked why artist are doing it, and that's the simple answer. If more people bought albums (or streaming actually paid artists) and touring wasn't how most artists made money, more artists probably would be releasing music right now, but there's not a whole lot of financial incentive to do it.

I can understand that rationale but....at this rate, big tours are likely not happening until 2021. That being said, this is an ideal time for mid-tier acts to release new music and lap up the streams that bigger acts might have hogged.

I would say Weezer is at the bottom of the top tier. Bands basically make no money on album sales anymore. It's all about touring. That's why the mid and lower tier bands are really hurting...

I think August Burns Red is a great example. They went ahead and released Guardians. It’s amazing but with a canceled tour and no real way to promote, the numbers aren’t there. I hope they haven’t lost too much but it can’t be a great situation.

ha well better then zero and, hey, maybe might encourage some purchases of merch or vinyl. The Weezer pushback makes more sense since there are lots of carefully laid plans by management and the label.

Fun enough track. Expecting a lower middle-tier Weezer record.

as a huge weezer fan (including the new stuff, they can do no wrong in my eyes lol) I think this discussion about holding off on releasing an weezer to coincide with the tour is interesting, as weezer is known for playing a "greatest hits" set almost every time they tour. so I bet when the album eventually gets released and hella mega tour happens, they'll only play "end of the game" from van weezer, in combination with the same hits from blue and pinkerton that they always play + beverly hills, pork and beans, hash pipe, etc.

so while I get delaying an album makes sense for the reasons everyone has listed above, I highly doubt the album will impact the setlist in any significant way
