I think the beats are pretty much the same, but the sequel did what a sequel should and upped the action, comedy, character moments, ect. My original point I guess was criticism of the movie, trying to relate it to this and BvS. People listing off stuff they liked but following it up how bad it was.

I like Marvel and DC films and would say I hated AoU and don't really enjoy the avengers anymore either. Those films aren't the pinnacle of the CBM genre. Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, TDK, those are all great films, neither of the avengers films are.

While the ones you listed are fantastic, I think the Marjory of the world would disagree about Avengers not being up there with the best. This place is great for revisionist history lol. Movies that were praised when released are now described as "not good". What a spoiled movie culture we have. It's great until the next one comes I guess.

That's just his own personal thoughts, haha. It's ok for people to not like The Avengers. A lot of people didn't like it when it came out too.

But yeah, lots of movies/things get overhyped when they're released and then don't hold up over time.

Part of what made the Avengers great upon release was the spectacle of having those superheroes sharing a screen at the same time, a lot of people were willing to overlook the film's flaws because of the hype tied to that.

Upon repeat viewings the flaws of the film stand more and more out.

The Avengers holds up really well. Literally have never met anyone irl who doesn't love that movie.

I don't doubt people don't like the movie are out there, but they are few and far between.

The average moviegoer won't scrutinise films to the extent many on here do. Most will simply take them at face value and don't care if there are plot holes or inconsistencies. They probably won't even notice if there are plot holes or inconsistencies, haha. Sometimes I question if that's the best way to be, as you can over-analyse pretty much any movie and identify at least some weaknesses. Cinema Sins is proof of this. Maybe it's better to just switch your brain off and enjoy the damn movie. But at the same time, critiquing movies can be fun. Idk I'll stop rambling now

We'll it's not that the average audience overlooks plot holes completely , but rather things like pacing, camera shots and technical things like that. That's why it's so funny when people buy into critics who can't turn that mindset off when seeing a movie that's just trying to be a good time.

Seeing this tonight. Local theater said they have 7 sell outs and the last showing is 50% sold out tonight.

You can want a good time out of movies and still hope for them to be good.

Nothing is above critique, nor should it be.

  15. I'm not saying that there will still be some people that cling to the idea of a "critic" of old. I, am, however, predicting that the vast majority of people will see very little use for the 4-paragraph review. Here's a hypothetical, that's not that far off: If you could have someone tell you, with about a 90% confidence rating, how you would feel about an album, movie, or book ... why would you ever look at Rotten Tomatoes? Because that's where we will probably be in less than 10 years. AI will be able to just tell you what movies to go see, and will learn how to find diamonds in the rough, and things you didn't think you'd like but do, and it'll be instantaneous. Will there still be a few people that consider themselves critics and writing (or filming) huge long reviews? Of course. But my argument is based around the general usefulness of reviews as a whole.

Sidebar: At this point in my life I'm actually surprised how little I care about "reviews" for anything anymore. Even I rarely read them. I see a bunch of people talking about Stranger Things on Twitter, I see Netflix has given it a 5-star rating from me, and I'm down to try an hour of it. If the critical consensus was horrible, I doubt I'd even know. Only way I know about RT and movie reviews are because people obsess over them (to prove their point one or the other) here. (For more on my dislike of ranking, this article from 538 does a good job laying it out.)

And here's where I disagree: I really liked End of Watch, enjoyed Fury, and think Dave Ayer is a talented writer and director. And I like the cast. So, I don't need critics to tell me anything - I'll go see it and I'm willing to bet I'll find it, like I find a lot of these kinds of movies ... fine. It's the binary state of "great" or "terrible" that I find myself most at odds with when it comes to these comic book movies anyway. I simply don't agree with that consensus around them. I think Thor is worse than Man of Steel, and I don't really feel any need to be in one "tribe" or the other when it comes to the films. I watch, I enjoy or don't, and I move on to talking about the parts I like or don't like. It's the hyperbole that kills me. (Then again, I'm the grump that doesn't get Modern Baseball or Captain America 1's appeal at all, but it's just my observation of the comments I see, and the complaints I see lobbed, that make me roll my eyes.)

I don't argue that the "craft" is dead. I still write, a lot, about my feelings on art. Nor do I argue that there won't be a hockey stick like graph for review attention in the future. But the aggregated long tail will be (IMO) pretty much worthless, and the few that do create a voice and remain "relevant" will (IMO) have far less influence than at any other point in "review" history.

I definitely don't think people will ever stop writing analysis or offering commentary.

  16. My favorite thing will be the generation of movie watchers that come up next that will their own movies to say "this critically panned movie is better than ___" — and it'll be these films. Mark my words there will be a snarky comment about BvS in that Lady in the Water role within 10 years.

Lady in the Water is probably better than IM2/3, Thor 1/2, and Cap 1 though. The Village, however, is Spider-Man 3 bad.

The Village is Shyamalan's best film, and one of the better films of the last decade.

It has its problems, but it does not have Jared Leto. These things are in degrees.

The whole film is a problem. What in earth going on here? The film is in "so bad it's good" category like The Room and The Happening. Its terrible on a a technical standpoint and a story standpoint. Leto is an Oscar winner who most people love. I'm so glad I'm here to bring order ☺

I really doubt "most people" even know who Jared Leto is. Winning an Oscar is supposed to mean what?

Lady in the Water is a very bold attempt at telling a fairy tale in a contemporary setting. It has its flaws (the film critic getting eaten alive is a very obvious nod to the critics who had attacked his recent work) and casting himself as the savior of mankind is one of the more egotistical things a director can do, but it has a strong emotional center and a sense of progression. It was unfairly maligned when it came out, but more people have come around recently.

I thought about warning people how awful the Counterfeiters is, but if they are already in a Nolan thread they just have to go on that journey alone.
