I love him so much. I remember following blogs when Lost was on and he was always hosting like mac and cheese watch parties for the cast or other equally adorable things and it makes me happy forever.

it kinda is what it is. It's a super sci-fi show...like just super fucking hardcore sci-fi and the creators are in love with showing the show not in order, which was fun at first, but the gimmick has worn thin and just creates nonsense confusion where there doesn't have to be any.

First season was solid, 2nd it kinda flew off the handle... and 3rd ive only watched an episode or two so i cant judge.

Season 3 is a lot more straight forward. There's still some wacky confusion but it's nowhere near like it used to be.

Thank you! Seriously, the few of us who hung around in the ap.net thread felt empty compared to the way bigger threads for more "prestige" shows airing at the same time. I always thought it got a bad rep due to its procedural formula.

The amount of write ups I would read about each episode... I miss that time, especially AVClub's reviews as they seemed to get it the most, and the regulars in the comments formed a nice community. A piece of me died when the site got that shitty revamp.

I was really looking forward to Westworld because it felt like Nolan would take some of the themes explored in Person Of Interest, and would approach them from a different angle. I think he just got it wrong this time.

As much as the former was restricted by the network it was on (ie. mild violence, procedural tropes, exposition, corny one liners before each break... that kind of stuff), it managed to go in depth with the scifi themes, and with the characterization. I felt totally immersed in a world with a Batman-like gallery of (super)heroes and villains thanks to the slight comic book aesthetic. The chemistry between the actors was always on point. Amy Acker in particular was fantastic in her role.

It had a warmness, despite the central character being an artificial intelligence, I don't find on Westworld. The latter's typical HBO-y grittiness just sucks all the fun out of it. On top of that, the convoluted plot makes it worse. It's like it wants to be smart, and makes YOU feel smart for dissecting the scenes to find easter eggs and clues and for coming up with theories, but it just doesn't have the range to pull it off. Regarding that aspect, say all you want about LOST's flaws, but at least it was entertaining.

Yeah I think I need to rewatch the former as I wrote much more about it than I expected.

  8. There's a lot that I think could turn people off for sure, and Caviezal is such a weird, understated actor. Even now when I know I love it and it's one of my favorites I watch him sometimes and I'm honestly not even sure if he's good actor lol. But the brooding works with the premise and the idea of Reese as kind of a blank slate or simple tool being used by the machine. And Emerson and Shahi and Acker absolutely add enough personality that Caviezal doesn't need to do any more than he does. I could probably talk a lot more about it too but I just started the rewatch so none of my thoughts are organized yet. Great show

it’s gonna sound weird and stupid, and it is, but passion of christ always kept me from watching PoI

  10. yeah,,,,, he's a weird guy. don't recommend reading his twitter it really bummed me out when i looked it up after i finished poi the first time

  11. There's always been something weird about Caviezel. I haven't checked his social media since the show ended, so I can't exactly recall anything odd.

And yep I remember his acting chops being regularly debated. He kinds of reminds me of January Jones in the sense that he isn't really demonstrative and expressive, but he manages to make those particularities fit what his characters demand.

Let's just say I'm grateful the show moved away from its male centric beginnings, and the other actors made up for his broodiness, even if he (unintentionally?) had some the funniest lines.

I hate when some kind of liquid or material from a scene ends up on the lens in a movie. It’s distracting and takes me out of the scene every time.

This sounds like talking shit about the continuous shot from Children of Men and I will have none of it.

The scene is great but debris ending up on the lens and being visible is a distraction and feels unnatural. It should be digitally removed.

I’m serious. Allowing something to be on the lens acknowledges that there’s a camera between us and the actors/scene/whatever. It’s a weird fourth wall break that, unless it’s specially trying to call out the fourth wall, it’s distracting.

I’ve always felt this way but am watching The Master right now. It’s one of the most “perfectly” shot and beautiful movies I’ve ever seen but there’s a part where he’s cracking open a fruit and a blob of pulp flies up and sticks on the camera. It instantly takes me out of the scene because it’s an “impossible” thing to be happening.

A good comparison is an extra looking into the camera. It acknowledges that it’s there and is distracting. Does that make sense?

Wasn't sure cause it wasn't intentional at all and it just happened but the scene took so long to get set up that they kept it in cause it was otherwise a perfect take. I definitely see how that can take someone out but for me I see it as adding to the disorientation and the chaos.
Though I did enjoy the humor of saying "unnatural" and immediately following up with "digitally removed" haha.

If you think of a film as being told from your third-person perspective, the camera getting dirty adds to that immersion. It puts you on the ground in something like Saving Private Ryan.
