Dunno how hot of a take this is but Bolt Thrower are the best old school death metal band by far. None of their contemporaries hold a candle to them.

Granted this speaks more to the fact that Bolt Thrower are so stupidly good that it's almost insulting, but still.

 

I have no clue what their name means but I’ve always thought it sounded badass.

Both of those bands are great - I'll admit I'm much more familiar with Morbid Angel than Obituary so I may have a bit of a blind spot, but they both deserve all the praise they get. I just think Bolt Thrower blow even them out of the water.

 

I'm definitely more into the style of DM that Bolt Thrower play. None of the super guttural vocals or overtly-gory imagery. Just weapons-grade caveman riffs, brother. That's the shit I love.

 

Agreed. I'm always a slut for gorehouse aesthetics and obscenely gnarly vocals, but when you compare an average BT riff versus an average MA or Obituary riff, there's no contest.

 

Did Chuck Berry not make this list? Also Duane and Prince are way low.

Bolt Thrower rules.

 

Bolt Thrower is definitely one of the most consistent death metal bands. They don't have a bad album. Morbid Angel has some bad albums, including one of the most famously terrible albums in the whole genre.

 

for old school stuff I like morbid angle, death, gorguts, suffocation, pestilence, cannibal corpse a lot more than bolt thrower

 

I think those first couple of Sum 41 records would be looked at in a more positive light if their name/aesthetic choices weren't so dated. All those singles were bangers.

Cliff Gallup was so far ahead of late 50s guitarists.

 

I remember how hated they were. The amount of smug metalheads who dunked on me because I was a fan of a band that ripped off Metallica or some weird arguments like that. It didn't feel like they were getting (nostalgic) reappraisal until their 2016 comeback.

I wish the same would happen for a good chunk of Good Charlotte's early records but now that's an unpopular opinion hehe

 

sum was my favorite of those types of bands from that era. id probably put them above even blink tbh i havent been big on anything theyve done since underclass but holy shit theyre tight live. apparently stevos a realtor now lmao

 

I'm in the same boat. S/T is the only Blink album that I would put on these days, along with Neighborhoods (yes) and a few songs from TOYPAJ / EOTS. Sum 41's early albums are all killer no filler, no pun intended, and the rest mostly holds up.

It also comes down to prefering Sum 41's jokes / quirkier side to Blink's I guess.

 

A real unpopular opinion for this thread is that All Killer No Filler is in my bottom 3 albums by them

You're the first person I've ever seen say that. I don't agree, but I get it.

 

I like their pure pop-punk stuff but I think they get a lot more interesting afterwards when they start adding heavier elements

 

Chuck > AKNF > Infected > Hour of Power > Screaming > Underclass > 13 > Order

 

I think I’d swap Infected and Chuck, but other than that, yeah what Steve said
