Sorry I missed this! I am fixated on what could have possibly caused this and what can stop it from happening again in the future. Apparently bats harbor a lot of different kinds and some could lead to other pandemics. It's actually pretty scary. (All mentioned in the audio I posted.)

Somehow missed this when I was listening to the Biden-Bernie livestream. Hope it can produce good results

Do you think Bernie will be able to have a lot of influence on Biden's decisions? I really hope so.

Ok, but... Where do you live? Because if you're not there in China, I'm not sure how much your take on what they do or don't eat is something worth you, personally focusing on. Like, other than proving that you're not wrong (which, yeah, is a human urge that I understand), what does it accomplish?

By the way, maybe I'm reading wrong, but I feel like you missed the point of what bigmike was saying. Like... "but bat-human contact is more likely to be farmers growing fruits coming into contact with bat poop/saliva/etc in those fields or in their barns where the bats take up residence" seems like an explanation for how this could be related to bats w/out being from this whole xenophobic (or at least xenophobia-tangential) obsession w/ Chinese eating habits.

I'm probably not gonna keep this conversation going beyond this post, lol, but especially as someone who's put my foot in my own mouth in different ways over the years, I hate to see this continue to be such a sticking point.

I think considering Biden and Bernie are friends and have worked with each other for much of their political career, he is going to value what Bernie proposes. Probably not to the extent that many people here would like to see, but I definitely think he will listen to Bernie much more than Hillary did.

I guarantee you Biden is never going to be going around trashing Bernie like Hillary has been.

No I know now it's not from eating bats at all so I was wrong in that aspect. If it is from farmers coming in close contact then I wonder if something can somehow be changed with farming practices (seems doubtful tho) There is a Chinese woman speaking in the audio saying people that live near the caves hang out in there too so that is also a very likely cause, just like farming close to bats is as well. What I'm trying to do now is basically discuss things (the reason why we all post in the politics thread and to bounce ideas off each other) and to ponder and theoeize where it came from and letting people know what scientists have said lately. I'm sure you would want to be updated on the latest research and findings?

Ps- I don't really feel like I put my foot in my mouth tho I feel like I was misinformed about one thing and then corrected myself and apologized but still had some good points about environmental impacts of encroaching on wild habitats. Also I get not continuing. Talks like this can get exhausting!

Rashida is awesome, the real deal. When she says she works with grassroots orgs I saw that first hand and it’s not like any other politician I’ve seen, it’s much more direct. Literally working with environmental justice communities by asking them for language to draft a sweeping environmental justice bill. Coming back into communities to attend and give public comment on permit decisions. Just exactly what a politician should be.

Plus it's not like bats are exclusive China. Me and half the people I know have gotten a bat stuck in their house. They're all over the place on the east coast heh. There are a lot of "exotic" animals that humans come into contact often enough without an outbreak starting. What's happened here is completely unprecedented.

Still feel terrible for the tiger and all the zoo animals that have gotten it, its so sad. Animal markets are just so disgusting, immoral and horrible. They really have to end.

Anyone have any bullet points on why Los Angeles / California were able to contain / stop the spread of the virus so much better than NY / NYC? I get NYC is a major travel hub but like... so is LA? Just wild to see how different the numbers are for those cities / states.

I could be totally wrong here but don’t way more people use public transportation in NYC than in LA? Public transportation is a huge vector.

also NYC has more people and is more densely-packed as well

Cuz of all the #posivibes here.

Really though I feel like part a big part of it may be infrastructure and density

I'm tempted to do some donating to Rashida Tlaib to help keep her in office, but like most people, I don't know how much money I wanna spend right now & in what ways. If that dang stimulus shows up, it'll make doing so feel a little more realistic, lol.

Yeah, I read the article version of it I posted above (searched for it cause I Couldn’t listen to the audio of it.)
Rashida/Abdul el-sayed are my hopes for Michigan politics. I think they’ll have a massive impact on the lefts movement forwards in the next 10 years.

it doesn't matter the specific animal, or where it happens, because any time you have places with a high interspecies density there's the risk of a virus jumping to a novel host which is how pandemics start. so if it was from bats, even though bats aren't unique to china, it would just be because for some reasons there's much higher exposure there. as we keep spreading out and new species start entering denser populations this will probably keep happening more and more.
