Trying to catch up once again on new albums I've missed so far this year. Here's the list so far: Entropia, Spektr, Brimstone Cavern, Urgehal, Irkallian Oracle, Dequisitor, Skaphe, Vredehammer, Zhrine, Coffin Lust, Stillborn, Behexen, Vale of Pnath, Xenophile, Logistic Slaughter, Cvinger, Withered, and Thrawsunblat.

Can anyone vouch for any of these before I dive in?

Went to Kuma's in Indianapolis for the first time last night, it's so good. I got the Mastodon burger and it might be the best burger I've ever had. The Pig Destroyer/Municipal Waste blasting on the radio didn't hurt either haha.

    OdeToTheSun and Richter915 like this.

Spektr is the only one I listened to on that list, enjoyed it a good bit.

Stumbled upon Zeal and Ardor on Spotify. I think it's my favorite album of the year so far? Goddamn. Such a breath of fresh air.

I gave the album a listen, and I respect what the artist is going for, but it's not cohesive to me at all. It just feels like a mish-mash of ideas thrown into a blender and the album is the end result.

New Opeth track is okay. The down-tuning of the main riff is nice, but the song itself feels flaccid and by the numbers. It doesn't have any of the emotion that I expect from an Opeth track.

Damn, I'm in a negative mood this morning.

That's a shame, I think it's the most cohesive aesthetic statement of 2016 so far. I feel like both genres blend really well together as they're both essentially exercises in dirge-like repetition with the telos of negation. And the sparse interludes are neat little experiments that add to the atmosphere.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree then. :) I support the general concept that he's going for with the release. On paper, putting those two seemingly opposite genres together should work, and it does in certain parts. Some parts it just falls flat, IMO. And the album as a whole just doesn't flow well to me. It's an interesting experiment, if a bit schizophrenic at times.

Glad to see he plans to expand on and refine the concept, but I'll be honest: the roughness is part of the charm for me. It kind of reminds me of listening to Ex Military for the first time.

And, yeah, yeesh @ that 4chan part.

Give Hideous Gnosis: Black Metal Theory Symposium 1 a read if you want some chin-stroking black metal pretentiousness.

I think this is fabulous music already.

Him calling out trve kvlt bm fans for being elitest was great. This guy seems like the last person on earth to care about the critics...more metal than most metal I say.

Yeah I thought that Zeal and Adore album was mostly awful but I respect what the guy is going for and can't really fault him for trying something new. And he seems sincere, which is more than I can say for that douchebag in Liturgy and his moronic manifesto.

Liturgy makes me want to launch myself into the sun.

I'll stand up for parts of Aesthetica since that was technically the album that got me into black metal I guess, but that one song on their last album that sounded like a herd of bagpipes stampeding thru a traffic jam made me give up on them

"Veins of God" still a banger tho

Anyone in here dig Plebeian Grandstand? Their most recent, "False Highs, True Lows" is one of my favorites of the year. Black metal in the vein of Deathspell Omega. Really visceral, hellish sounding stuff. Going to see them tonight and really excited.

Their old, hardcore-leaning stuff is great, but I think this is their best work by far. Not hugely dynamic, I guess, but I just find it really satisfying.
