I understand the Will Yip complaints but I don't see how repeating them with every band he works with makes it any better.

A band has never worked with Yip and gone elsewhere

I also don't understand the point of criticism or vocalizing general distastes. No good ever comes from criticism like ever

    that is truly wrong
I am criticizing your criticism of critique

I just don't get everytime Yip is mentioned, everyone and their dog starts posting about how he is the worst producer. Like others have said, obviously the people actually writing the music and paying to record it love working with him.

People are still allowed to have opinions about the quality of his work and share said opinions.

Really hope this was not directed at me because this was not at all what I was saying.

I'm not saying people can't criticize him or his work. That would be silly. But it is admittedly a little tiring to see this conversation come up with every band he works with (and he works with a lot of bands). I enjoy 70 degree days a lot more than 90 degree days, but when I get a 90 degree day, I don't bring it up every time I have to go outside. That doesn't make it any less hot, and it only makes my enjoyment of the day decrease.

yeah yeah yeah. i know. this is the last thing im going to say on the matter, but i guess i dont get it because if i have a negative opinion on something, ill share that and then i dont feel the need to reiterate it every single time it is brought up on the website... but whatevsssssssssssssssssssss, opinons are opinions, youre right.

You and I are on the same page. Not worth discussing further, and as I said before I'd never attempt to silence someone for disagreeing with me which I hope people on the other side of the conversation understand. I guess I just have a different way of handling criticism.

Posting you hate his production is not useful or productive criticism, no, but I think it's a good discussion to have if done the right way. Every time I have seen it brought up, I've gotten a new perspective if people say why they feel that way, and I feel like it's helped me notice more nuance as a listener.

Hey man, we all can't be like you Supporter

people who hate his "style" strike me as the kind of people who don't know much about actual production. Each record sounds very distict in comparison to others, at least to my ears *shrug*

I think he definitely has a style, in terms of certain sonic preferences that pop up ( things I've noticed after listening harder: for some bands it's a hazier sound that blends things together, sometimes it's kind of bare sounding, for other bands it seems to be certain vocal effects) and I think it's valid to not like that. However, I do agree each record sounds pretty distinct, but I think that has to do more with the songwriting and the band than the producing. Like I would never say Hyperview sounds like Floral Green because for the most part it doesn't. That has more to do with songwriting than anything. "Head in the Ceiling Fan," despite being closer to Hyperview stuff stylistically does not sound like a Hyperview song because it was produced with a certain other batch of songs written in other styles in mind (I would assume). This made sense in my head, I feel like I'm rambling though.

  14. I'm actually pretty sure when Anthony Green did the Saosin record, the band wanted to go with a different producer and Anthony went out of his way to have his vocals done by Yip. Not sure of the story behind that, maybe it really was just more convenient, but it sure comes off as some crazy dedication.

Criticizing the production is fine but it always bugs me when people think the artists are wrong or don't know what they're doing when they choose to work with him. Reminds me of when Thursday kept going with Dave Fridmann for their last few albums and people kept complaining the songs would be better if they didn't sound the way they did.

I think the continuation of the Yip criticism is likely just due to new people seeing the conversation and chiming in, but I do understand what you're saying and agree that rehashing it is mostly unnecessary.

  19. If I'm not mistaking, this all stemmed from @cherrywaves saying that it's already been brought up in this particular thread like three times. No one is saying you can't criticize something you don't like, but to have that conversation over and over and over is a little tiring

if I were tired with conversation I would duck out of a thread for a bit. there's not alot of talking points for this album yet save for a single track and it's being produced by a dude who's put out alot of work recently

Only just caught up with this thread - wish I could say it was a pleasure but er...

Anyways... I'm listening to mewithoutYou for the first time. I love the instrumentation but the vocals aren't to my tastes really. Really reminds me of Interpol on Pale Horses.

EDIT - Now there's shouting I appreciate this much more. Not a huge fan of them on the first two songs so far though.

They were definitely a grower for me. Keep trying. If you eventually realize that they just aren't for you, that's totally fine, but it took me over a year to truly appreciate them and now they're my 3rd favorite band. (Typing this while wearing my MWY shirt)

I actually started with Ten Stories, but Brother, Sister is what sold me on them. I think starting with CFUTF is a good call, though.

I'll give these a try later then in that case. I'm not alone in hearing the Interpol similarities on Pale Horses am I? Until the screaming of course. I mean I guess any band with a baritone/whatever the fuck tone singer could draw that comparison, but still.
