I've started on the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and am about 5 stories in...and I've finally read the 4 main stories:
    A Study in Scarlet
    The Sign of 4
    Hound of Baskervilles
    and Valley of Fear
I figured it was about time to watch the show and holy crap. I've just marathoned up until Season 3 episode 3. My mind is blown. A lot of people talk about Cummberbatch, but Martin Freeman really steals the show. He's an excellent Watson and overall stellar actor. It's a treat to actually watch these performances. Mrs Hudson is perfect, Lestrade is awesome. I'm sad that it took so long for me to watch. The way they modernize stories and weave in the real dialogue and overall nuances of character traits is fascinating to me. I get so excited when I see even the smallest book reference added in.

I've just read A Study in Scarlet. Excellent read. Going to move on to the others now. It was great reading it and then thinking back to the corresponding episode.

I'd agree with everything you've said about the performances. It's just fantastic all around.

    Constant horror and bone-deep dissatisfaction.

I highly recommend you to watch it as soon as you can, it's really, really good.

Great that you started with the first story. It's worth going back and re-watching the Pilot again and seeing everything they incorporated. How they modernized and created a different twist on the Hounds of Baskervilles was so intriguing.

Yeah, I downloaded a 'complete works' from Kindle and I think this version has them in chronological order of when they were released so think I'll stick with that. They're quite absorbing books and easy to get into which is good.

Right on. I've been finding it surprisingly hard to find information on the new series, is it three episodes over three weeks?

    Right, here are my thoughts:

There's a moment when they're in Morocco (I think) when Sherlock says something along the lines of "let's go back to London, that's my turf" and for me that sums up everything wrong with this. It's classic Moffat - I think he did the same with Doctor Who. Far too convoluted. Just get back to London and solve some crimes. There's too much going on here.

As for Mary and her death... for me it kind of nullified the whole of the series 3 finale. There, due to the vow he'd made, he killed someone he couldn't beat intellectually to save her. Here she just dies (and to save him). There's no pay off as it follows too quickly. I know there's themes of betrayal and not living up to promises etc but it's all a bit messy because too much is happening...

I don't know. Intrigued to hear others options. Obviously the episode DOES ultimately fit well with the vibe and direction of the final episode of season 3.

    Regular

Really enjoyed the episode. A lot going on though. There was a strange flashback when Mary put Sherlock to sleep to steal the memory stick that I didn't really understand.

I do feel the next two episodes will have a more classic Sherlock feel to them now. From the end of the episode can we assume that Mary was somehow responsible for Moriarty appearing on the screens?

The side story with John and E was strange. It's almost like they were trying to make us dislike both sides of the John/Mary relationship? There must be more to that than just what happened in the episode. Strange bit for sure.

Pretty hyped for the rest of the season. Hoping next week is just a Sherlock vs murderous psychopath.
