Monsters University is a perfectly charming little movie. If this is on that level I’ll be happy

If I were to fantasy book the voice cast for this, I would have loved if Elijah Wood was Ian and Jack Black was Barley.

    So assuming that this weekend...

I haven't been this excited about seeing a Pixar film in a long while. The fact that the main characters seem based on a couple of metal heads is so far up my alley I'm worried that I'm going to love the film but it'll ultimately bomb because it doesn't appeal to a wide enough demographic - ie kids won't want to go see it.

I'm going tonight, so I guess I'll have a better idea after that. I'm excited that the reaction seems positive so far.

they’re not metalheads, not sure where that distinction came from beyond how barley is dressed maybe

    So assuming that this weekend...

Yeah, I'm basing it on how they're designed and the fictional posters I've seen hanging in the bedroom. On another look, it's mainly just the big brother.

how was the simpsons short before the film? my screening didn’t get that

    So assuming that this weekend...

The Simpsons short was sweet and pretty funny. It was done without dialogue, so it had the feel of your usual Pixar short. But it still kept the reference humor and tone of a Simpsons episode. The short follows Maggie on a sort of adventure.

This thought I had was incredibly far off and should be paid no attention.

I saw the film tonight and it was good. I probably wouldn’t put it in my top half of Pixar films, but it was still enjoyable.

I personally have no desire to see this but we'll probably take the kids this weekend. Maybe.

Heard this is like Monsters University (which Dan Scanlon did) - charming for most of the movie, but then the third act has the Pixar touch

Didn't realize there was a Simpsons short before this. Definitely gonna try to catch it this weekend now.

Haven’t seen this yet but I’m liking the positive Monsters University talk in this group. Super underrated movie. Not top tier Pixar, but I love it.

it was super distracting that the main character and I share a name, Barley obviously
extremely rude to have a centaur playing DDR be a 5 second sight gag and not an entire movie
Octavia crushed it give me the Manticore movie
lol at Todd from Last Man On Earth being Colt
I had a hard time buying into the stakes of the quest, probably because I'm an adult not technically haha, also all I could think of was Uncut Gems was also a quest for a cursed gem
also the characters were kinda one note and I feel like they could have done more with the fantastical creatures, it wasn't quite Bright but kinda was, I never saw Bright

This was excellent and imo the reviews are underselling it big time. Reminds me when Coco came out and it was regarded as “pretty good Pixar”. I saw Coco and immediately knew the reviews were bullshit (98 on RT but still, wasn’t hailed as the masterpiece it is).

This is also far superior than Monsters University. Which is a solid little movie, And there are obvious similarities with Scanlon directing, but he basically improved it in every way. It works really well, and for a movie juggling a lot of styles and themes that’s pretty impressive.

It definitely earns a spot next to Coco and Inside Out as a return to form for original content by a great studio. Expectations for Soul should be sky high.

Saw this on Sunday, but forgot to post about it. Thought it was pretty good. Probably somewhere in the middle for me on the Pixar ranking tree haha. Can relate to Ian quite a bit (even though I don't have a strong desire to know my father at all) because I never met my father either. The ending was beautiful though.

    My original film only rankings:

    1. Ratatouille
    2. Inside Out
    3. Coco
    4. Wall-E
    5. Up
    6. Toy Story
    7. Finding Nemo
    8. Onward
    9. The Incredibles
    10. Monsters, Inc.
    11. A Bug’s Life
    12. Brave
    13. The Good Dinosaur
    14. Cars

And I like all of those films. The only 2 I don’t care for in the entire Pixar canon are the cars sequels. Good Dinosaur has some humor that just doesn’t work but some small moments that really do and it’s still the best looking Pixar film imo.
