Yeah it’s very contextual for me. Some artists I adore for both their music and lyrics and specifically how both aspects of their songwriting complement each other. Julien Baker is probably the best example for me. With other artists, the lyrics are just kind of there. I never really learn them, and they just sort of wash over me. Bon Iver is a good example, although I always enjoy his lyrics when I actually pay attention.

 

On lyrics: I said this a while ago in another thread. It really applies to most non-hip hop music, especially pop and rock, not just pop punk.

 

I feel like I was more discerning about lyrics back then, or at least trying to me. I always hated Cute Is What We Aim for and Red Jumpsuit and those because the lyrics were hot garbage. Others I liked in spite of some clunkers (what's up, The Spill Canvas and Panic!), but I realized at the time it wasn't their strong suit. Most of the lyrics I thought were good then, I still think are good, even if some of them are pretty dramatic.

 

Bad lyrics don’t bother me. But good/great lyrics will elevate something I like a lot to a “LOVE” level.

 

I'm in this boat, which is weird since my main genre is hip-hop. I mostly love production and delivery, but I'll definitely notice amazing lyricism or shit lyricism and it will affect the quality of the song for me

Anecdotal of course, but I don’t know a single person who has downloaded a ringtone for the better part of a decade.
