You guys can certainly argue details in what the dude said and discuss your differing opinions and stuff, but I don't think it's necessary to basically call him wrong just for not liking an album you do. We all have different perspectives on music, isn't that kind of the point?

  6. I do think it's kinda lame to label any opinion you don't like as a "hot take" as a form of demeaning it, but if that guy gonna come here and say things like "the split is basically what their self titled would be if it was any good" and "sure buddy, you keep thinking that" then I think countering that by calling it a masterpiece is not only fair, but pretty light handed

Sure, he initially worded his opinion pretty bluntly, but then again, many others users on this site do exactly the same thing. The comments that bother me are the ones that are basically saying "this album is factually a masterpiece and you are incorrect for saying otherwise". Again, the original guy isn't totally blameless for saying "sure buddy, you keep thinking that" or whatever, but sometimes there's just not much else to say when someone's acting like you're factually wrong for preferring one album to another.

  8. Yeah, I mean I agree with that. It's kinda difficult on the internet and this site in particular because I've seen those types posts attacked for stating opinions as fact, but then other times the person who initially posted it replying to the attack with "do you expect me to put IMO after every single thing I write or what". I often find myself at a fork in the road reading posts here where one side of me is like "well that's just this person's opinion and the aggressiveness I'm reading must just be out of context", but the other side is like "this person is being an ass" haha. I do my best to always assume the former, but it gets slightly more blurry when it's a poster I don't know very well.

I might've just took what you were saying and ran in a totally different direction with it, sorry if that's the case. Kind of a fruitless discussion anyway haha (because s/t is a fucking masterpiece).

I wouldn't say it's factually a masterpiece but I'm allowed to offer my counter opinion

Nah, that's what I was getting at too. It seems like a lot of the time the same people who will jump on a user for stating their opinion as fact will then turn around and do exactly the same thing, i.e. "this guy's an ass, oh and also S/T is a masterpiece" ... just seems silly to jump on others for doing it if you're doing it too.

Regardless of this conversation, S/T is the only Moving Mountains album I like at all, but I still kinda don't get all the love for it. It's okay.

Yeah, just came off as a lot of "you're wrong" to me, and not just from you either. I could be just reading it wrong; if so, that's my bad.

No it wasn't meant as a "you're wrong" or anything, just countering the blatant condescending negativity with a positive opinion

I do the same every time someone shits on Waves, haha. You have to stick up for the albums you like.

Although, for a somewhat positive post coming from the other side, what do you guys all love so much about S/T? I genuinely don't understand the massive appeal, every time I've listened my reaction has been "that was fine."

When I die, I will be placed in my coffin with my vinyl copy of the self-titled and that's that.

I love the relaxed vocals throughout most of the album and all the layers of the songs too. I think every song makes itself known as opposed to Pneuma and Waves where things can blend together a little bit. I think the self-titled capitalizes on a lot of moments throughout too. I'd like to say more, but my phone is about to die haha

Interesting, the songs definitely blend together quite a bit to me. I'm not the biggest fan of the guy's vocals either, but I don't hate them. I'm sure I'll try it again in the fall, and maybe I'll read lyrics too - I don't do that with albums probably quite enough.

As @OotyPa said, I think the lyrics are beautiful. As far As the music goes, I think they created a lot out of a little. It could be a simple keyboard/synth note that strikes an emotional chord with me. Hands is a prime example of that. Swing Set and Apsides have those moments too.

Looking at Apsides in particular, I absolutely adore that song. That song really cuts into me, especially after the chorus. That repetitious build up into the back half of the song and that back hall's repetition in general just really digs at me. It's such a gloomy song.

Honestly, overally, the self-titled is one of those albums to me that just strikes such a strong emotional chord. Everything about it is marvelous to me.

You guys really like to throw the term masterpiece around don't ya?

Never was I condescending. Condescension would involve a feeling of superiority on my part. I don't feel superior to any of you for thinking the self-titled album is mediocre at best. Do I think I'm right? Absolutely. But I don't feel superior for it. That would be stupid. We're discussing music here. It's not that serious.
