Even time I look at that thread I regret it. I'm fine with avoiding it, if any bands I like are mentioned then I'm sure I'll hear about it on social media or music outlets.

 

People give him a pass because he apparently tries to change after a mistake (what I've been told, I don't really follow them closely) which is fine and good but it always rubbed me the wrong way how often it seems to happen and how he is blatantly unaware of his own privilege when it comes to certain things and other artists would be dragged for a lot of what he has said but so many people look the other way when it comes to him.

 

I know we have a lot of 1975 fans in here I like em too not trying to hate on them just giving my perspective

 

It reminds me of that essay that went popular (“my wife left me because of dishes in the sink” I think it was called)
Like we don’t want an artist that will just correct when we correct him. We want one who will actively critically think about this stuff before doing it so that we don’t HAVE to correct them
It’s exhausting having to correct over and over and shows that they aren’t really thoughtfully engaging with what’s being said and the underlying issues

 

They're just so ready to cancel bands they don't like and defend ones that they do like, I think it's actually worse than those people that just ignore the shitty things that musicians do altogether

 

FWIW I definitely didn’t take the ‘weird stuff’ line to be directly and solely referencing the act - rather the fanbase’s defense of it and how it all came about. Video is clearly satirizing that culture. I don’t know why anybody would expect anything ‘deeper’ than ‘everyone is addicted to their phones maaaan’ from a pop band.

 

i like the band and don't particularly believe there is any reason to 'cancel' them, but time after time he says and does stupid shit and absolutely gets a pass on here, it's nearly not even worth getting worked up about anymore, because it's gonna go nowhere.

 

I don't really buy his attempts to change, to be honest. He keeps saying incredibly stupid things. He seems like such a huge fucking asshole.

One week later, his "apology":

"'I’m not apologising for saying ‘rock music is void of misogyny’. I didn’t say that. Any body who says that is not only thick as f--k they most probably don’t have physical eyes... I’m apologising for the fact my words could INSINUATE that misogyny in culture and music is an exclusively hip hop (black) issue."

i mean to be very fair, the whole pinegrove situation WAS very weird, if you're looking at it in totality of the allegations followed by the p4k article then subsequent additional allegations or reports that the survivor didnt actually wish for things to come out like that? calling it a 'weird' situation isnt what threw me, its that its just, like i said before, so easy to NOT mention them or support them, even if theyre not mentioning them as a means of support, the fact that the 1975 drops the pinegrove name is huge exposure for them lol

I'm not sure if there being multiple accusers is part of the public narrative (re: Pinegrove). From my recollection that was just implied by like people in bands (who in all fairness, would have a pretty good idea of what's up) subtweeting when all that stuff came out. Maybe I'm wrong

 

What? I’ve followed them since before their debut came out. He says dumb shit but I don’t get why him saying dumb shit means YOU expect something deep? I literally do not understand what you mean rn. It’s a pop band

 

Also at the end of the day it may seem like I’m coming hard for him but I just truly don’t care about him at all, I just don’t mince words about my feelings/viewpoints

I know a lot of people love him and I’m honestly not judging. We all have problematic faves.

 

Wasn't too keen on using "weird" to describe it myself but more than that it was bringing up their name at all, yeah. Especially considering a lot of what we as chorus users know is mostly unknown outside of this site, so people that look into them will likely get the pitchfork account of things and it could end up just gaining them fans. Idk.

 

iirc a lot of what came out afterwards is known only by some folks who post here and shared the info. a lot of what happened was never made public or released. i could be wrong though and please correct me if i am, but thats why people are so easily giving phoebe a pass, because supposedly so much of what actually went on really never got discussed except in this forum by folks in the know.

I say because literally every white dude I’ve ever heard talk about them claims them to be a very deep and meaningful band
So that’s why “I” or anyone might expect them to be deeper than the most shallow take I could think of in 2020
