Cool list, lots of artists I don't know but it was cool to see Modern Baseball. Interesting for some bands to have more than 1 song but of the songs I know the choices were great.

 

I'm in the same boat. Though many of that late 90s/early 00s was a-copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy, think quite a few did a lot to move the genre forward - particularly a few you mentioned. On the whole a lot of good stuff here though.

 

I don’t think they’re saying what they did is exactly the same, rather that when someone preys on underage girls in any way, it’s a mistake to keep trying to keep the artist separate from the artwork when it comes to compiling opinion lists on how good some song is. It just acts as a way to erase the stories of the victims.

 

But also Jesse Lacey did some really horrible shit? This isn't just, I don't know, like Pinegrove, or something (what he did is bad too, but you know what I mean).

 

I hate what Jesse did and how he handled it. But some of their songs legendary in the context of this list - including several on Science Fiction.

 

Really? I thought he took advantage of being a lead singer of a band to create relationships. I don't think he preyed on underage girls.

Did not realize that. I remember reading his apology and it was so convoluted I had no idea what he was actually apologizing for. Also seeing that Jesse got a shit ton more flak, I figured Jesse was "worse".

 

My immediate guess for #1 was Dashboard’s “Screaming Infidelities” but I’m glad it went to American Football instead.

 

I’m amazed that’s not in the list tbh. Hands down belongs for sure, but so does that.

 

Probably should stay away from lists, going that route...rate anything from other decades, etc, it’s the same thing and just as bad or worse... ah well...it’s a tough subject for anyone...and this can carry over into shows/movies as well...

 

The Stereogum number ones column about My Sharona (published just recently) springs to mind after reading this. The writer basically says yeah the song is about the 25 year old singer being uncontrollably horny for a 17yo girl. And that being the case the lyrics are very gross. Then the singer got together with the girl (and she's on the cover). I don't know if that makes it all seem better? Anyway then he gives it a positive review -- 8/10. That seems like a much more obvious example of the issue that the Konstantine blurb raises.

Yeah it's hard to apologise for what he did without implicating yourself in a crime, or multiple crimes. That's why it was so vague.

 

Mentioning how great they are defeats the purpose of leaving them off the list. This was actually handled terribly. They tried to have their cake and eat it too. If they truly didn't want to promote them, then they shouldn't have mentioned them at all. Leave it to the comment section to discuss their exclusion. Just by mentioning how they're good enough to be on the list, they're promoting them.

I would have been fine with them on the list and I would have been fine with them off the list. But stop with the disclaimers. Commit to one or the other. Stop trying to do half way.

Pretty good list. I dig how inclusive it is of all of the different waves and styles of emo. Accident Prone should have been #1 though.

 

Pretty good list overall. Cohen's blurbs on "Never Meant," "Decade Under the Influence" and "Sweetness" are particularly great.

Absolutely unbelievable the list doesn't have a NMG song. Ian rated that album third best of the decade from memory (Celebration Rock pod). It was top 10 at the very least.

 

If they'd left them out of the list without mentioning them, the discussion about why they weren't on there would have still taken place and probably in a more aggressive/toxic way. What they actually did was preemptively diffuse that discussion and I thought they handled it well.

I think it was handled very well and I still stand by my opinion that Brand New's songs should have been featured on the list. OTOH, Fall Out Boy is on the list and I remember there were some allegations that Pete Wentz was dating a 14 or 15-year old when he was in his mid-20's... but that was just kind of forgotten. So I don't know.

Gonna show my ass here but I'm working my way through the playlist and feel like I have less of a grasp of what constitutes Emo than when I started lol. A lot of pretty disparate sounds here. Enjoying it though, discovered some cool stuff I wasn't familiar with.
