Also Bernie is playing a turnout game more than trying to change minds at this point so a) don't want to be the clear dominant frontrunner, people will not wanna go sit through six hours of caucusing (which I think was your point) if they think he's winning regardless and then b) the kind of people who will support Bernie are unlikely to be dumb enough to jump on the "hot hand" candidate at the last minute just because the last poll showed that candidate winning
