  1. Guess I'm gonna be the weird one for thinking both of these songs have pretty killer pop hooks.

Oh, absolutely! Far more than the two collabs I mentioned. They’re just riskier. On the other hand, that could end up making these songs bigger. It’ll be interesting to see.

  3. it's like we just didn't see an artist with moody vibey tracks sweep the Grammys haha

not saying that this is a Billie Eilish rip but the essence and style is there

  4. I dunno, I guess I don't think I'm seeing the "this is so risky" and how that's being tying that to "integrity" in music. These two songs seem pretty in line with quite a bit of very popular music lately. (SHAED, Billie, Meg Meyers) And I think pop music in general gets a bad wrap and people associate making pop music with having a 'lack of integrity' or that it's somehow not creative. That's always bugged me when that word gets tossed around.

  5. Hah, yeah, when Billie is arguably the biggest thing in music right now, it's hard not to draw some comparisons and say "this is what is huge right now" - songs like the Zedd tracks aren't nearly what they once were in popular culture/music.

Hell, a Kate Bush cover is the number one song on alt radio right now:

Love leave it alone. Even more Radiohead vibes , I think it’s mainly that guitar tone.

I can see the argument for this being risky considering what Hayley's done in the past, both with Paramore and as a feature. This is much darker and moodier than anything she's been a part of before. In the grand scheme of music, though, this is pretty in line aesthetically with what's popular.

This is a pet peeve for me too. If she was writing huge Carly Rae-esque hooks and making big money there wouldn’t be any less integrity or artistry in it.

What I’m getting at is Hayley’s success feels more personal because she runs the same artistic circles. When After Laughter was getting praise from big names, it was crazy to think of them being exposed to someone like Aaron Weiss, on top of seeing her rep artists like Julien Baker and bringing Copeland to big venues. And it’s sweet to potentially see her leaning into those influences even more. If she gets a lot of success from this, that would be even sweeter. I think the integrity comes in for me in the fact that Hayley has never outgrown her community no matter how successful she’s gotten...She’s always used her platform to raise awareness for these more niche artists. I wouldn’t expect otherwise, she just happens to be the only person I know of who can make a direct line from Taylor Swift to mewithoutYou.

And absolutely, this stuff could be huge. I love Billie Eilish and the success she’s gotten. I think I’m hearing some of the more obscure influences in these songs and forgetting how marketable it actually is.

This whole song reminded me of something, too (not sure if I picked up Radiohead, but definitely something!).

And not to take anything from Hayley's pop-writing prowess, but she didn't write the choruses for "Airplanes" or "Stay The Night."

Ah, a quick Wikipedia search could have told me Christine Dominiguez wrote the “Airplanes” chorus. I’m seeing Hayley Williams cowrites on “Stay the Night” though? This is Wikipedia, so...

    Things have changed.

No clue about whether she actually wrote on the song, but plenty of big artists want publishing before they'll even consider taking a song. Again, no context for what the situation here is.

I believe she helped write the verses. From what I understand, Zedd already had the chorus. But clearly, she makes the song for both of those.

It’s funny. I always thought the “Airplanes” chorus was so distinctively HER, I never considered that she didn’t write it until now. “Stay the Night” sounds less so to me.

this song immediately made me think of Noah Gundersen's "Out of Time" (mostly just the moody sparse bass-driven vibe but still)

edit: also the fact that I get to live in an era that has both Hayley Williams and Noah Gundersen makes me feel #blessed

This song is nice background music to zone out to for me, but nothing in it really stands out in it to even get the tune stuck in my head. I listened to it 3 times in a row, and a few hours later, I couldn't hum a part from it if I wanted to. Liked Simmer a lot more

  21. Idk how I missed that she was releasing another song, need to stay tuned into this thread haha. This is really cool though, might even like it more than Simmer

I like it more than the first song but it's not blown me away or anything. Interesting lyrics on both though.

I think it might be cos the start of the chorus sort of sounds like the start of Paranoid Android. Kinda.
