Saving Mr. Banks - 6/10 - Solid performances from Hanks and Thompson, a few giggles here and there but very forgettable.

I LOVE Sturges, but that may be his best. Absolute masterpiece.

Have you not seen The Great Escape yet?

I'm also partial to Ice Station Zebra and The Old Man and the Sea.

The Great Escape is one of my all-time favorites. I guess I need to watch Bad Day at Black Rock.

No, I surprisingly haven't despite it being so well-loved over here in the UK but it is on my watchlist among some of his other directorial efforts. I'm just glad I bought Bad Day at Black Rock on a complete whim.

Yeah I actively seek him out when I can. The Magnificent Yankee is a pretty nice one, though he was definitely more of a studio hire on that one. Marooned has its flaws but looks beautiful. Mystery Street is a unique take on a B-budget crime procedural. Right Cross is fairly skippable though.

That's it for what I've seen from him. I really want to see Kind Lady and The Law and Jake Wade at a minimum.

Will check both Marooned and Mystery Street out as they sound like my kind of thing, thanks for the recommendations.

  11. Today? So you didn't see it in a theater? *shakes fist*

Glad you liked it! I'm so mad it's not nominated.

  12. I actually did see it in the theater. It’s playing at my neighborhood discount place

    While I'm here...

Just saw 1917. Maybe not the best of the BP nominees I've seen, but definitely very well made.

  15. I bought Amelie at a used bookstore on a whim without having seen it and my friend convinced me to watch it with them and it's really good!

Then I watched Booksmart for the third time and I still like it a lot!

  16. Parasite was good. Give it all the awards.

(I love The Farewell, Booksmart, Little Women, and Midsommar more, but those weren't nominated as much/at all, so)

watched solaris tonight (not the tarkovsky one) and my question is... why didn't everyone who was alive two decades ago line up in droves to see this film? why didn't it make more than two-thirds its budget?

There isn't much of a reason to watch that one when the Tarkovsky one exists.

  19. Sort of half-watched Eps. 7-8 a couple weeks ago while I had family over. TFA is enjoyable, but dang, even when paying attention only some of the time TLJ is something else.

Finally watched 3 today. I didn't dislike 1-2, they're not as terrible as other people seem to make them out to be. I do think 3 is pretty weak, though. I feel like 3 and 9 suffer from trying to do too much. 3 is good in concept but poor in execution, while 9 is the other way around.

Still haven't rewatched the original trilogy in, idk, 15-20 years? Gonna do that next, and then maybe give 7-8 a proper, un-distracted rewatch. And maybe Rogue One? I don't really have any desire to see 9 again any time soon. Or Solo.
