My heart really aches for Taylor. I watched the video she put out and it’s clear she’s still struggling so much. I truly hope she has the strength to get through this and whatever further vile, manipulative, abusive shit Jonny is going to continue throwing her way.

What they thought then is completely inexcusable, but in their defense, at least according to podcasts and stuff feat Tim, Aaron, and Spencer, they regret it and are remorseful. Also don't have those views anymore and are vocally anti Trump

It’s wild how many of those Christian metalcore/post-hardcore bands were around and popular back then. Like it never went away but none of the big bands in that scene touch the success of bands like Underoath or AILD had, they were huge. I often wonder what killed that scene’s popularity, I point towards bands like For Today just being straight shit head bigots

There isn’t a defense for what the guys in Underoath said or did, having been raised in a brand of Lutheranism that could easily be described as a cult and growing from that into who I am today, it’s not as cut and dry as “fuck what that person said 11 years ago they are terrible forever.” Especially when the bubble you live in actively praises and rewards that. It takes an incredibly strong and independent mind to resist the sort of programming that conservative Christianity plays on young people. I think there is a lot to say for people who have actively grown and apologized for that mindset, because when you do that, you lose your entire world. It’s easy to say that everyone sucks ass (they do) but when you have like max 50 people in your life and you’re cut off from them because you stood up to their backwards beliefs, it’s difficult and lonely. This is word salad but I think there is room for nuance on some shit people said when they were kids and have actively tried to rectify.

I hope Underoath addresses those comments because they are disgusting. I personally feel that culture has changed significantly since 2005, and Underoath’s members have definitely changed a lot in general over the past decade so I really hope they don’t feel the same way that they felt. I think it highlights how toxic that community was and is, and a big portion of why I am uncomfortable with it. I will never understand why people would outwardly hate others simply because of their sexuality.

a lot of Christians truly believe that they are helping LGBT people by suppressing their rights, it’s not necessarily about them feeling an active hatred. A legitimate anecdote I had to sit through in a school that my parents paid for me to attend was about someone whose brave gay uncle who “fought” his sin and was an active Christian not acting on his urges or whatever, and how we should all strive to squash our sinful nature in that way. I can’t even think of how many fucked up things about women, LGBT people, abortion, etc. I had beaten into my head.

I agree that they should address this- any former Christian or Christian who doesn’t hold with these beliefs that doesn’t speak against them is doing themselves and others a disservice.

Just chiming in as someone who was raised around conservative christians that I definitely think we need to make room for people to change, if the people I had come to know later in life were like "fuck you forever for thinking this" I wouldn't of been able to get out of it. It is very much a cult mentality that instills a lot of fear and adding on top the fear that people are always going to hold what you said many years ago does not leave you with much motivation to get out of it because then it becomes a sort of damned if you do,damned if you don't situation.

I grew up in a super conservative religious household and my entry into live music was the Christian metal scene as well. I remember one of the biggest moments of me starting to turn away from Christianity was when right after high school one of my best friends came out to me as bisexual and he was crying worrying that I was going to hate him because I was a Christian. I absolutely didn’t and hugged him and reassured him that that wasn’t me. It was a huge part of me starting to just say fuck all of that bullshit.
